What coin series do you think wear well?

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
In my opinion some series wear well, meaning a well worn (but not damaged) coin, maybe 35-45 , always look nice. Take Lincoln's for example or maybe Walkers, they always look nice to me in mid circulated grades, Yet take Mercs (which I love in higher grades) don't look as nice worn. What are your favorite "worn" coins?
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

I like worn Morgans. They are probably in the population minority for that series, too! The dirt and the history it could represent is cool!

Seated Liberty coins also wear well. Buffalo Nickels, indian cents, Standing Liberty Quarters are among those that don't wear well.

  • I love nice circulated Walkers with slightly darkened crevices to bring out the design.

They are beautiful coins all the way down to AG!
  • I totally agree with you JRocco on Mercs, I think they look awful in circulated grades... I like Circulated Barber Dimes and Quarters... and Capped Busts, especailly the smaller denoms with the right grey color, look awesome!!! image But it's funny, I love the look of Capped Bust Dimes and Half-Dimes, but I don't like them in MS... image

The entire Barber series wears well. I like strong VG's to AU58's...

I love those nice original quarters!
  • Seated Liberty coins for sure.

  • I like most coins in the VF/XF range and that's where most of the coins in my type set fall. I especially like VF and XF Barbers, Seated coins, Flying Eagle Cents, and Capped Bust coins if they were well struck to begin with. It seems to me that some light wear and a little bit of dirt/grunge actually accent the designs quite nicely.

In the lower circ grades Buffalo Nickels are my favorites. Even in GOOD and lower their designs have among the most distinct and recognizable silhouettes.

For low grade coins (like G-4 to F-12), I'd have to say the Barber series. When I started coin collecting, I hated Barber coins. I think it was because the design was too simplistic. But later I noticed how very low grade Barbers look almost as nice as higher grade coins (XF-40 level) because the design is so simple. However, this only goes for "original" looking Barbers. I've gone from hating the desing to collecting the entire series in the G-4 to F-12 level. I'm taking my time finding nice original coins. It also shows how you can be a coin collector with very little money. The last coin show I was at, the only thing I bought was a Barber Dime for less than $2 and was quite pleased because it was another Barber with that original "eye-appeal" that fits in great with my set.

I also think the Liberty Nickels do well in lower grades (again, I think it's the simplicity of the over-all design).

    Bust quarters and halves, clearly.
  • The holey ones! Take a look at lordmarcovan's vest. image
  • I think flowing hair coins look pretty, even in AG condition. In VF grades I like draped bust anythings, IHCs, Morgans.

I agree with most responses. Let me add Flying Eagle cents to my top list also. They look soo nice with some wear on them. Just like the one BC posted. What a beautiful coin.

I think the biggest in size like the old dollar coins (not sac & SBAs) and halves wear the best. like the ladies say size does matter!

Airplanenut you're way off base with the type 1 SLQ there are way to many old wearen dateless SLQs out there.
