old cent rolls

Can anyone tell me why people used to wrap coin rolls in aluminum? I see this on e-bay. I realize they thought it kept the coins nice but how? I have heard of cathodic protection. Is that what is at work here? Joe

I tried it many years ago and it seemed to ruin the coins.

There was an experiment reported with this at another site though and there were excellent results.

Aluminum foil is readily available and easy to wrap coins in.

It was common in the 60's and early 70's. It was an unscientific attempt to keep the coins from toning. I really don't know what the long term results of this practice were.

When freezers became a big thing in the U.S. the older people who had lived through the depression didn't trust banks. Many of them would wrap their coins and currency in aluminum foil and place them in the freezer for "safe keeping."
