Grade the pictures not the coins

I'm thinking of taking my picture show on the road and setting up at some local and regional shows to photograph coins for both dealers and collectors who might either want to sell their coins, share their coins with others via the internet or whatever. What do you guys think of the quality of these pics? As far as looking like the coins, they're pretty darned close. So the question is - if you were at a coin show and you wanted to sell these five coins fast through Ebay or whatever, would you be satisfied with the quality? I appreciate your input.

Thanks!

Frank

The only thing I can see is that you need to fine tune your white balance. Do you have multiple settings for incadescent, tungsten and flourescent?
  • Good observation Eric - I do - and hadn't thought about that - thanks - I appreciate your input. One of the problems I have is that my computer at home has an old monitor, and I've been adjusting my pictures on this thing. Lo and behold, I got a new laptop for this project and guess what - the pictures look different on the new monitor! So I will have to adjust accordingly - thanks for the observation.

You're a little heavy on the red. It can be fixed using color correction, but that is a pain. With a little trial and error, you should be able to find the exact setting to use. Also, you might want to remove whatever is causing the green reflection in the top two images.
  • I think your photos are fine Frank, and if you enjoy doing something like this then I would say go for it!image

Your grasp of the obvious astounds image
  • Frank, overall the quality is outstanding, listed below are comments that you might find useful.

#1- reverse seems a mite fuzzy- might be the slab needs to be cleaned
    #4- reverse-at 5 o'clock - is that a reflection or on the coin?
#5- is that haze on the coin?

Just what I see, I wish I could do as good a job!

  • Garnet:

#1- reverse seems a mite fuzzy- might be the slab needs to be cleaned - That's a DMPL coin and they're extremely tough to capture - there's so much going on that just getting an image that's decent is quite the task. Cleaning the slabs prior to taking the pics is a good idea though image

#4- reverse-at 5 o'clock - is that a reflection or on the coin? - That was a reflection that I saw after I took the pic - but I didn't want to dink with the coin too much. I think I can fix those things.

#5- is that haze on the coin? - This coin is hazy and I picked it for this exercise on purpose for that reason.

    Thanks for your input! image

Frank, the glare from the Ott lights are distracting and give a false sense of color on some coins. mike

Hmm - hadn't thought of that either - I'll have to experiment and see how the pics look without the ott light I've been using - thanks Mikey! image
  • I think your lighting may be a little too harsh. My images look a little "flat" and the coins loose a lot of luster when I use too much direct light. You may want to try either redirecting the light or diffusing it. Also if you can adjust your white balance manually, I would do it rather than relying on the automatic setting.

    Hope this helps.

Your pictures work for me,they look good.

If you fine tune the pictures, they will look great.

    Is the,84 L.A. dollar picture,through plastic?
    NUMO
  • Yes - I took the picture of the 84 Olympic still in it's case - just wanted to see how good/bad it would come out. The camera pics up every last little fleck on the case.
