My friend bought gold plated state quarters!

A longtime friend of mine recently purchased all of the gold plated state quarters. He has never shown interest in coin collecting until now. How do I tell him he was ripped off without making him get upset and leave the hobby? I believe him to be the type of person who would get very angry. He asked me to come and look at his new coins and he was very excited. He said these coins even came with a certificate of guarantee that they are authentic. I have no doubt that they are authentic pieces of junk and shudder to think how much he paid for them. has anyone here been in a similar situation? How should I handle this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

  • See if he can return them. They are worthless.

They are real quarters and they are gold plated,,,,,, There is no telling if they will become collectable,,,,, stranger things have grabed the publics fancy.. The Pet rock comes to mind.... I would tell him that he has a wonderful looking group of coins and that if wants to extend his new found LOVE,,, you would be glad to see that he gets quality coins at a good price if he wants your helpimage
  • Buy him a book on collecting Gold. We all make mistakes in this hobby. Just steer him in the right direction he seems to like "gold style coins"

My dealer friend and I were talking about a similar problem he has run into. When a collector comes to sell him coins that aren`t what the collector thinks they are. He has to give them the bad news and then they get mad at him. He said it puts him in a real bad situation that can cost him a customer. I guess when other dealers agree with him, the collector will find out he`s right about their coins.
  • Since he already made the purchase perhaps you can just tell him that they are very common and not worth much (don't say worthless). In the future if he wishes to continue collecting, he should consult you before making purchases until he is seasoned enough to begin making decisions.

I can think of a dozen reasons not to have high capacity magazines, but it's the reasons I haven't thought about that I need them.

Who has not gotten mad at himself buying junk (and I am not talking just coins)? I know I have. It is just a part of the educational process, give him the bad new now so he could educate himself in the future in whatever he buys.image

  • Not to worry John; My grandsons age 5 & 3 gave me gold plated coins on my birthday, fathers day and Christmas. I jumped for joy, telling them that they are the greatest thing in the world, and that I'm rich. Then I tell them that I like the silver colored ones better. They passed that info on to their mother, and now I get the silver ones.
  • There's no way to provide a win-win for him if you pooh-pooh his purchase as unwise.
I'd suggest noticing how the light glitters on the golden surfaces (it does).
Work in a comment about the value of state quarters in attracting newcomers to the
    world of numismatics (they do).
Later, mention that state quarters won't ever become valuable in our lifetimes because
    they're so many (they won't).

  • Send him a link to an Ebay auction selling the same crap so he can feel like crap.

All kidding aside, buy him a red book and take him to a show.
