What is a 1939 Reverse of 1940 and 1940 reverse of 1938 worth in PCGS PR65 or 66? I can't find them in the price guides and most of the auction sales are old.
Thanks,
Charlie

here's what my records show:
1939 Reverse of 1940.
PR66---PCGS holdered coin sold for $1100 on 1/8/04.
PR66---PCGS holdered coin sold for $750 on 1/29/04.
1940 Reverse of 1939.
PR66---ANACS holdered coin sold for $675 on 4/27/03.
PR66---PCGS holdered coin sold for $850 on 1/8/04.
you can probably get more history at TeleTrade and Heritage, these sales are from my eBay files where i only track PR66 and higher. the two sales from January 8th were at the fun show and both coins were in first generation undesignated holders. grades below PR66 don't seem to find much demand and the prices settle in at less than $300 from the scant files i have kept due the true rarity of the issues.
my opinion which has developed over the past two years-----either of these are worth buying at realistic prices in whatever grades they are found in, they appear so infrequently.

I saw a dealer advertising a1939 Reverse of 1940 PCGS PR65 for $600, which sounded high to me, but maybe not from your records.

You can click here for a run down on what the 'reverse of' designations are and then you can check here for a price guide.

you might have read my post and understood that the sales listed were from the past January's F.U.N. Show. while they were also on eBay, they were sold by Heritage at a live floor auction in the past few months and are representative of expected prices.
the PR67 you mentioned is one grade higher than what Charlie wanted information for. while at the show, i was offered $1000 and a PCGS holdered PR66 1940 R. 38 for my PCGS PR67 1940 R. 38-----by a dealer. your inference that a higher price can be realized at auction is more a reflection of the higher grade and not the coin or venue it's sold at. these varieties in PR65-67 sell strong wherever/whenever they show up.
