As usual, there's an interesting story to this coin - but I'll let Dahlonega indulge you. For now - let's just guess the grade on this beauty!

I dont know jack about SLQ's but I'll go VF25.

  • 16's are never as sharp as 17's. I'll say XF40. It's got an easy full shield. Eagle's a little weak, but I'll call it strike. Congrats on the find. Nice coin.

    Edited to add:
I think the date may give it a bump as well.

  • Great looking coin, I'm going to guess XF45. Looks like it was struck from rusted dies resulting in a loss of some detail which makes it look worse than it really is. Much like this one that is graded AU-55:

  • Grading from a scan is nearly impossible. But here it goes....AU-55

  • A little additional info. Coin has that slightly dirty, original look with a clearly visible, strong 4 digit date. Showed it to a few 'vest pocket' dealer friends at the Pelham show most guessed VF 30- 35, my guess an XF 40 [I don't know much about SLQ's] and the guy 'vest pocket' who we think is the best grader [and get many of our second opinions from]
looked at it less than 10 seconds and said XF 45. With that the bets started on who is correct... a Dr. Pepper being the prize. So you have all the info will post results later tonight. Personally I'm amazed that a Pawn shop 1916 quarter turned out to be real.

Boy, if Tonelover's is a 55, Dahlonega's must be as well. I cannot take the suspense. image I need to follow the D-man around more. Great pick-up.
  • Coin posted as PCGS XF 45. Everybody was pretty close but Tonelover called it.image

Very nice pick up, especially from a pawn shop.

I gotta start going into those places, if this is what might be out there.

I can't "guess the grade", as you just posted it. I thought it'd go AU 50.
    I had a PCGS 53FH & a PCGS 58FH, which I sold this past Fall ( they were consigned
to a dealer, and I got my asking prices). Your coin has a touch more wear ( from what I can see in the scan)
    than the AU53FH.

Congratualations ... hope you only paid VF35 money for it, as that grade seemed to be the consensus
of opinion from the other posters.

  • That's right, anyone want some more of that?! image

Although it does look similar to the one I posted, there is more wear on Liberty's leg and the eagle's right wing. I love the dirty look, please do the numismatic world a favor and keep it far, far away from NCS okay? Thanks in advance.

Again, great coin. Congrats on the super purchase.

I'm wavering between Vf20 and 30. Don't know the series well and just guessing.

Amazing pawn shop find! I don't want to know what you paid, lest I become more jealous. And, I would always defer to Tonelover's opinion of grade when it comes to SLQ's! He simply knows them well.

If it wasn't a 1916 SLQ it probably would have had a hard time doing better than F-12. I would say Tonelovers is what a true
XF should look like. Fact is on these "rarities" though you usually get a bump from the graders. As long as you only paid VF money for it though I would say you did OK.

looks genuine, i grade it vf-35+, right on the cusp of being xf, which it'll probably slab at, & an absolutly outstanding grade level for that coin. congratulations, FANTASTIC JOB!!!

Great find, especially at a pawn shop. I would have graded it Vf-35. Nice original coin, but I dont like the way PCGS grades 16 SLQ's, thier way to liberal with this date.

These coins in circulated grades have gotten so high, that it is difficult to find one priced fair. Many dealers are wanting grand+ over sheet.
