Are you looking at 21-Ds in the VAM book? VAM 1 would be normal dies, VAM 3 is the dot next to wing, which this is not. I know there is a supplement out for the various die cracks, and was hoping someone who has the supplement could pinpoint it. This does not match any of the basic VAMs in the main VAM book.
It certainly looks like VAM 1H, "Spider Web Stars" as pictured on page 26 of Roy Joyce's FUN WITH 1921 attribution guide. I believe it's one of the more popular varieties.
OK, thanks. You never know who may be lurking here. Isn't he the one who had the web site up about 21-D cracked die varieties? For some reason I can't find that site again.
Rob's website address is: www.rjrc.com. He has pictures of most of the different VAMs. You can compare them to see if your coin really matches them. Your coin looks to be slightly earlier die state that his picture in the book and Leroy Van Allen's June to December 1999 update to the Big VAM Book.
OK, thanks. I found his site, and this is quite similar, though mine has a signifigant crack under the date that the example on his page does not show.
I printed you pictures out and went over them again and John is right, it's a JOH-9/VAM 1AM. The die cracks/breaks in STATES are sometimes tough to be sure you have the right one. On this variety, the area of TES of states is most interesting. Still one of the harder to locate varieties at this time.
