Is acetone o.k. for all coins?

badgerbadger Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭
I am new at this game. I have bought some unopened proofs from the 1950's and - heaven forbid - opened them. A few coins look like there is a haze from the plastic. I heard that acetone will remove the haze. Is acetone o.k for all the series - silver, nickel and cent?

Any suggestions?

I dont think you wanna use it on the cent. Actually I wouldnt do it to proof coins at all, but thats just me, you might be fine........but not on the cent.

Welcome! Acetone will not remove haze from coins. A good product for removing is MS70 which is non-acid based. However, you really don't want to use MS70 on copper coins. The acetone is great for removing any moisture after you've rinsed the MS70 off with water. But acetone will not remove haze.

You can get MS70 just about at any coin store. I buy mine here:

Thanks for the guidance. I will order the MS70. I suppose I should try the technique on pocket change first.

  • I have used acetone on cents and had them graded by PCGS. It simply removes grime and can't alter the copper metal. However I still won't use it on a high priced cent. I think my 09-S VDB in 65RB could use a little bath but I do not have the stones to do it.
  • Don't use it on 1913 or 1968 keeling cocos coins, they may dissolve. Don't use on Japanese Kobans, removes the ink writing from the surfaces.

badger acetone's ok for the coins you mentioned. do not ms-70 the copper coin, unless you like sky-blue pennies. your likely stuck w/ some haze though. haze can be removed, but it's unlikely you'll be able to just dip it off
