Why is the 1997 Jackie Robinson $5 Gold worth $1500. Is there a story behind that?

Wasn't issued by the mint for a few hundred dollars? What's the deal?
Collecting since 1976.

The MS J Robinson is the key to the modern commem series. With 5174 coins minted, it is in the same league (sorry) with the Grant comm dollars (there 5000 no star and 5008 with star of that series).

I'll hold on to mine for a long time.
  • Quite a few of the PCGS MS69 $5 Robinsons have begun to tone and it is getting quite difficult to find one that is in untoned blemish free condition under $2,000. If this is occuring after only 7 years I wonder what they will look like in another 7 years.
  • That reminds me... I was the stupid idiot that bought 5 Robinson UNCs at mint pre-issue price then sold all for a quick kill, average of about $700. The price shot when the mintage figures were releasedimage

I wonder if the Unc 2000 Library of Congress $10 Bimetallic with a mintage of 7200 or the Unc 2001 library of Congress $5 Gold with a mintage of 6800 will increase in value anywhere close to the Unc Jackie Robinson $5 Gold?

I got my Jackie in just under the wire at $800:

At the time it was the most I'd ever paid for a coin, but now I'm sure glad I did.
  • Those of you who bought one:
    Did you buy it
    --as an investment?
    --because you liked the design?
    --because you collect commemoratives/modern gold?
    --other?

    Just curious.

I bought the coin from the mint just to complete the uncirculated modern commems. Got tired of the poor designs. I unloaded the Robinson for $1900 in November. Good price for an ugly coin. I don't know what the mint is thinking about when they design these lifeless, unimaginative modern issues. I have just about 40 of the earlier issues from 1982 to 1991 to sell and I am done with collecting modern commems. I have saved only the Library of Congress Eagle since it is a unique issue, the 1984-D Olympic proof Eagle, the Columbus $5 proof, the 1988 $5 Olympic Proof, the Washington half proof, a Smithsonian Dollar MS70, a Westpoint Military Dollar MS70, and the other 4 Olympic Eagles. All the rest are going, going, and almost gone. So far I am about $6500 to the black.
