Home PSA Set Registry Forum

New around here.

After a couple of months of watching the forum, I decided it was time to jump into the fray. I have just begun collecting 1965 topps and would be interested in any advice anyone may have about this set. At this point I have no ambition of completing the set or rocketing up the set registry (I believe I am in the cellar right now), but just like the look of this set and the reasonable price of most of them in PSA 8.

  • Welcome to yet another David. I'm not a '65 guy but there are certainly lots of others who are. Best of luck and happy collecting.

  • Welcome David!!!

We need more 1965 guys around here! Now that we have weeded out all of those bums who quit on this set (the boobs, basilogne, and the unquality card guy), it's time for the serious collectors to make a run at this set. image

Seriously though, good luck with your set and it's probably a pretty good time to jump in with a large set being broken up right now.

    David,

    Welcome to the boards!

A couple of years ago the 1965 set introduced some of us to not only the registry but these boards. Although nearly all of us now longer actively collect the set...we all keep in touch and talk about the old days once in a while. At one time we had a active Yahoo group going too!

    Regarding the 1965 set...

Here are a couple of threads that you might find interesting:

Random thoughts/advice regarding 1965 Topps Baseball (December 2003)

Here were my opening remarks that were made in most recent thread regarding the 1965 Topps baseball set:

On another thread Tipem (Vic) was interested on some nuances and/or a few pricing parameters regarding the 1965 Topps Baseball set. I figured I would list some thoughts I had regarding the set and hope others who have collected the set could add their own thoughts as well.

1.) PSA 8 Commons: I hate to say it but in the past two years the prices of random PSA 8 commons have gone down in price. Cards that once where selling for at or above SMR can now be had between $10-13.00. This is good news for collectors who wish to build a good majority of the set for well under SMR. For instance just a day or two ago...a #223 Dan Osinski PSA 8 sold for $9.99 yesterday. I have both bought and sold that card for well over $30.00 a year ago. In fact it sold for $38.00 back in April of this year when Mastro sold off his set.

2.) Charlie Smith: The KEY common to get. POP of 4 and all the cards (except the elusive PSA 9) are spoken for. Davalillo has always had one of them. The other 3 have been sold since April 2003. 2 via eBay and 1 privately. Mastro sold his for $306.00 in April of 2003...mainly thanks to snipe programs freezing. The person listing his set had 597 auctions ending at the exact same moment. The one Skipm. sold for approx $500.00 this past summer I believe. The 4th Charlie Smith was just sold this week.

3.)Stars and Semi-Stars that hold their prices: Bob Gibson, Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Lou Brock have held their values well. Tony Oliva is a monster semi-star in this set and sells for well above SMR. In addition expect to pay well over SMR for Bobby Richardson, Ken Boyer, Rico Carty and Joe Pepitone. In fact, if you do not mind slightly oversized cards that are held in Mylar sleeves...Mickey's Sportscards has a Joe Pepitone PSA 9 at a great price. Mantle also is holding well as a well-centered PSA 8 will sell right around SMR. Try to get the rest of the stars and key rookies for under SMR....except for the Morgan RC...this shouldn't bee too tough.

4.)Team Cards: The most expensive team cards compared to SMR will be the Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Twins Team cards. Do not get sucked in my the SMR for the Mets, Yankees, and Orioles Team cards...there is a ton of them in PSA 8 and can be had at a discount.

5.) Yankees, Yankees, Yankees- The commons usually all go for above SMR with the exception of Pedros Ramos, Pedro Gonzalez, and the Yankees Rookie Stars cards.

6.) High Numbers are the easiest: Yep...even though the SMR is higher....the high number (SMR of $22.00) are the easiest cards to get in the set.....these can be had many times at 50-60% of SMR.

7.) Low POP Commons - Here are some of the tough ones...for now...next year they may be all over the place (ie. Joe Gibbon). #14 Len Gabrielson, #21 Don Blasingame, #25 Al McBean, #44 Wade Blasingame, #71 John O';Donoghue, #96 Sonny Siebert, etc.

8.) Watch who is winning the auctions...if you see a new name winning 75% of the auctions they are bidding on....especially the higher pops...back off. Chances are this may be a collector new to the set who might be over-paying for some of the easier cards. Do not try to compete with them....patience is the key.

Also...feel free to email me any time if you have any questions regarding the 1965 set.

    Good Luck with the set!

  • The post by John highlights how great these boards are. Where else could you get such insightful and in-depth knowledge? I'll answer that hypothetical - nowhere!
  • I too used to have a 65 BB set. I believe I probably enjoyed putting that set together more than any other one I have worked on or am now working on. Great design and awesome photography on most of the cards. I had to buy the Aaron and Mays even after I sold my complete set.

I have a theory on why some of the high numbers are easier to find in better condition than the low numbers. If you have heard this before I apologize beforehand.

When I colllected cards as a kid, I played games with the cards and generally tossed them around haphazardly. I couldn't wait to buy the cards form the local corner 7-11. As the summer progressed I still bought the cards, (which were probably the mid series or high numbers) but did not play as many games with them. Most of these went directly into my box after looking at them for a short time.

See where I'm going with this. The cards purchased later in the year were kept in better condition. Anyone think this theory has any validity.

    jaybyrd,

Absolutely! I don't think this is necessarily a "theory", I believe it to be fact. In the set that I am most familiar with - 1970 Topps baseball - I can tell you that I have purchased bulk lots through various sources, complete sets, singles, etc., and the cards in the best condition are overwhelmingly from the final series. This can be seen in the POP Report as well. When I was collecting the set in PSA 8/9, the 9s from the 7th series would generally sell for little, if they even ended with a bid. Just look at some of the sets on the registry - you will see many that are loaded with PSA 9s near the end of the set, while the lower numbered cards are mostly 8s with a few 9s here and there. Sort of contradicts Beckett's pricing of high #s, huh?

Check my 1970 Topps set for an example.

  • Thank you for the welcome everyone. John, thanks for links, it will definitely help me to make sense of what seems like a fair price to pay. My collection will definitely be growing slowly as I am on a pretty strict budget. That's alright with me though as I am in no particular hurry. I am actually amazed that when I do pick up a card (three so far) that I still like looking at all the stats.

LEVY73 - No problem...seriously...if you have any questions regarding a price point for a particular card or why is a card going for so much (or so little) on eBay ...email me anytime at jbasilone@adelphia.net. I would be more than willing to help you out (or anyone who is starting or thinking about starting the set). I was lucky to have a couple of people do the same for me when I started the set.

THEBOBS - Brian...what the heck are you doing out in SoCal? Griffins says the area is beautiful out there. I hope to visit it some day.
