I've never before been tempted to do a registry set. To me, the idea of a public competition seemed distasteful at best. Well, I just got a small group of Canadian dollars in the mail and figured I'd enter them, mainly just to see how the interface works. I had zero interest in joining the competition. When I entered the coins, I realized that I've been missing something all along. The Registry Set is, at its core, a virtual coin album. I was amazed to find that I got the same addictive rush out of adding a coin to the registry set (and filling a "hole") as I used to get adding a coin to a physical coin album. The competition angle is just a bonus for those that want it. If you have any doubts, give it a try. You can always delete the set later.

Dorkarl - I would have asked the same question before trying it.
BTW, it's still more fun to look at real coins in a real album. I'm only pointing out that the rush of adding items is the same (for me) in either type of album - real or virtual. I didn't anticipate that.

It's also like a giant coin club meeting, only better because nobody is getting greasy fingerprints all over the coins as they're passed around.

Exactly. I enjoy photographing the coins, loading the pictures, writing the short descriptions, etc.
You know what, it makes it feel like a hobby--and I'm doing something enjoyable.
Competition has exactly zero to do with my participating with a small set. I will admit I was kind disdainful of the Registry until I experienced it first hand. Now I like it. It's like any other aspect of numismatics--different people will take different things out of it.

I'm glad you tried it. Many folks don't have an open mind and just dismiss us as plastic collectors. However many registry set folks downgrade or sideways trade coins to improve the quality of the coins in their sets.
I really enjoy viewing other peoples sets. If they weren't online I would never have that opportunity. Sure some can go overboard with the competition aspect but completing a set is a great accomplishment even if it is ranked last place. Come to think of it it really is an awesome accomplishment if you could finish a set and still be ranked last like the "Best of the Worst" type set was trying to do
An excellent way to share your collection with others while away from home, too!

This is my only reason for frustration that NGC coins are not allowed in the PCGS registry. I could care less about the point system but want to share these coins too. Cross-over fees get crazy and I am absolutely not willing to let PCGS downgrade a properly graded NGC coin.
That aside, it's still a lot of fun.
