What grading company is good for Morgans and Peace Dollars?

I was looking at ANACS (yes because of their prices)...I'm cheap! But really, I have about 20 to send in ... Would PCGS be better than ANACS? I don't have a NGC dealer close buy, so I can't send them there.

Thanks!

It depends what you have and what it might be worth. I would wait for one of their 10-10-10 sort of specials at ANACS and do it then. It might be worth the $8 or $10 for the opinion. The better stuff could always be cracked out and sent to PCGS.

What condition are the coins in and why do you want to slab them?

If you submit them to PCGS on an Economy order make sure you take pictures first! They will be away so long you won't remember what they looked like!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • steve27: IMO they are in AU condition...I did send a 1928-P Peace and a 1882-S Morgan into PCGS...I'm anxious to see how they do...they both were "labeled" in those stapled square cardboard things "Proof like"....so we will see. My dad and grandfather had a bunch of Morgans and Peace....I'm started selling some on Ebay, but the more I get into them, the more I am enjoy them...so I thought instead of selling them right now "raw", I would send the ones I think are worth sending in and see what grade they get...We don't have many dealers around (at least any I trust) the area ...and with 2 kids, I don't get to many shows...I have been learning alot watching these boards...so I guess you could say I'm kinda getting the "itch" to collect Morgans and Peace....

I hope this makes sense...I'm rushing to type and get the kids on the bus (on time!)...

Personally I think that just because ANACS is cheap you do get what you pay for. I don't like the way they grade circs, they overgrade them in my opinion. It just burns my but to see a Morg graded FINE but doesn't show the 2 lines in the cotton balls. They are also too easy on PL & DMPL and an ANACS holdered Morg will often receive the next lower designation & PCGS & NGC. ANACS does seem to get the numerical grade right on Mint State Morgs.
So if you're wanting to get your raw coins holdered it must be in the back of your mind that you may sell them one day so PCGS & NGC would be better than ANACS. If you're goning to keep them in your collection forever then it really doesn't matter who's holder they are in.
You don't need a close dealer because you can send them to NGC & PCGS yourself.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • ANACS is having a special on silver dollar grading right now.

$10 - Per Silver Dollar Submitted
    10 - Working Days Turnaround
    10 - Coin Minimum Submission

ANACS is great for VAM attribution and good for slabbing problem coins that PCGS won't slab, and you will get the coins back pretty fast as well.

However, ANACS holdered coins are definitely behind PCGS and NGC in terms of market acceptability. That is, an ANACS MS64 just won't bring the same kind of money as a PCGS MS64. It may not matter on coins whose value is around $100 or less, since the benfit of the cheaper slabbing cost and faster turnaround time could outweigh the negative of a possibly lower selling price. If you have a high grade/expensive Peace/Morgan, and your goal is to realize the most on your return in selling it, it *may* be better to just send the batch in to PCGS, then watch the grass grow for a while. It all depends on what you want to do. If your goal is just to "check out the grade". There's an even easier way to do it. ANACS will give out free grade opinions at major coin shows. Just look on their web site. Attend the show and get free opinions. If your goal is personal enjoyment, and the slab is just encapsulation and protection, then it's just a personal perference on which plastic you like. Personally, I like PCGS holders, I think they're elegent. ANACS holders are quite functional, but I like the PCGS holder better.

So it all depends on what you want to do and what your goal is.
  • I can't really speak to Morgans, but in my experience NGC grades Peace $s as tightly as PCGS. Either of the two will result in a more marketable coin. Also, if you are a member of the ANA you can submit directly to NGC, and don't need to go through a dealer.

Always looking for PQ Peace Silver Dollars (blazing WHITE ones only) in MS65 & higher.
  • The best grading service is NGC. But they will not grade your coin if it has been cleaned. It is best to buy already graded, figure in the cost of grading when purchasing a coin.
