  • Spink 2004 EF £8 and UNC £45

BU usually sell for around £25-30

EF usually can't be sold for more than £2

Thank you Lloyd, I just found one in a big mixed coin lot.

It still has luster, doesn't seem to have much field damage. The ear and hair seems to have no wear, is there anything else I should look for to find if it is MS?
  • The tops of the thrift plant on the reverse should be as sharp as hell. All the little circular 'seedy' bits. There are never any weak strikes so it must be good.

It's hard to tell with the obverse but the reverse should give you the idea. Also don't forget the general appearance. Lack of wear does not mean the coin has not seen circulation.

Bag marks are common on these because clearly the sharp edges and dumpy weighty style will cause a lot of damage. For clear unmarked specimens there is a large premium, which I suppose is true for all coins, but these in particular.

I've got a number of nice 3d's-one of my favorite coins 'cause they tone so purty...

I'll post a couple of pics in a few days.

Great coins to collect in MS - there should be a big shortage of them in the next ten years or so. They were heavily used in circulation - a very popular coin for spending and saving. Small but substantial, not like the silver 3d which was obviously an awkward little *"$o[ink!. Special 3d piggy-banks were made by the Post-Office.

Here are some scans. It has way more of the yellowish luster than shows up here. I'll have a closer look at it with a larger mag later this week. Pretty fun find in a Kg mixed coin lot.

It's a pretty good date to find, too. Looks EF. May be UNC but coin has to be in hand to determine that....

The 1939 books at £40 in UNC. This must be one of the EASIEST dates to get in full BU.

Very true. The Marles guide rates it more at £20-30 and I think that's more realistic. Some Spink prices are pure fantasy, especially for 3ds.

  • The 39 I have is a nice one, not faimilar with ease of getting one in nice condition, I got this one from a friend it's in a plastic holder now, NGC MS-64....

SORRY about that - I wasn't referring to your icon coin. I was just adding some advice regarding the 39. Really the dealers want a lot for 'em when there's lots around. It's like a no-win situation.

    Another example: the 1949 and 1950. 49 books at £275 UNC and the 1950 at £50. I've seen a few 1949 in BU. I've never ever seen a 1950.

  • Lloyd,

No apology required, I was not the least bit offended or upset what so ever, only commenting on where mine came from and how I got it. From what I have seen here in the U.S. most of the brass 3ds have that muddy look to them. Mine has alot of nice brite luster to it, I got it from Mongoose in a trade deal a few months ago.

I'm still looking for a 1949-52 in BU for my type set. I have a borderline unc (1952).Not so easy to come by in BU these brass 3d.

EDIT: Lloyd, what was the tactless remark? I missed it. You can always reedit. image

That's right .... The 52 is by far the easiest (he says scanning the icons) but still incredibly difficult with full lustre and no ugly bagmarks.

OH I just said how easy the 39 was to get in BU when it's book value is so high. Anyone else looking in would think it's a direct assault on Glenn's icon coin.... ME WE GOT DE BIGHUGE MAAWFF
  • It might be easy in the UK to get a nice 3d, but I have not seen that many in the US......

The toughest 3d dates are 1950 and 1951 IMO. Why? Because everyone one knows and has known about the 1946 and 1949 scarcities for years. I have seen a lot of 1946 UNCs go on sale on ebay. The 1950 and 1951 were shunned for the proof coins of those years. The '50 and '51 proofs are much nicer looking than the business strikes but are common.

As for the business strikes, I have seen one respectable 1950 UNC, which I have - it has a couple of hits but is much better than other high grade ones I have seen. I have seen only one high grade for 1951 over the years - I grade it AU.
