Mastro Lots You Know About

Not being able to wait the few weeks until the Mastro catalogue comes out ... I thought that this would be a great thread. If you know of a mastro lot that is not on the preview (and its good) let us know now!

I know of some absolutely insane items that will be in the auction. I also included the prices I think each set will get

Complete Bread for Energy Set (originally from Don Shelly's Collection)
--$25,000. If it was split up into sports, it would bring about $40,000.
Complete Bread for Health Basketball Set (originally from Don Shelly's Collection)
--$25,000. There will be a bidding war for this.
Complete Advertisement Sheet for Bread for Health Basketball (like the one on my site, contains 16 cards).
-- $6,000. This should go for $10,000, but I don't know how many people will bid on it.
PRISTINE SET of either 1961 or 1962 Kahns basketball (and one of the color issues).
-- $5,000 These are the nicest Kahns most people have ever seen. If Mastros is smart and grades them, the set could go insane at $8,000.
Complete set of Comspecs (this should go for a bundle)
-- $6,000 This set will go for an insane price.
Ticket to Chamberlains only losing High School Game
-- $800. I have no idea what this will go for.

P.S. These items are not mine. But let me know what you think of these items. Complete bread label sets. INSANE.

  • I know of three basketball lots, all ungraded:

1970-71 Topps set NM-MT to MINT
1971-72 Topps set NM-MT to MINT
1968-69 Topps Test partial set (13 of 22) NM

  • Wow ... who is auctioning off the partial Topps Test set? I know of somebody who had 13 of the 22 Topps Test cards, but those cards were sold a few months back to another collector (who now has 16 of the 22).

  • And on that note, why would you ever sell a lot (not a set) of Topps Test? I would wager that you would get twice as much if you broke them up and sold them individually.

There should be a nice 1974 Steve Carlton jersey in the auction, too! Certainly hope it does not get cut up, though!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • I remember the Scott's Set (and know who has it). It was actually incomplete, missing the Bob Doll (so only 12/13 cards were auctioned off). It sold for $25k which means that it went for $30k with buyers premium. I only know (directly) of five people with Scotts cards. Two have sets. One has two commons. One has a Mikklesen. I have 3 (Grant, Harrison, Martin). These are some of the rarest basketball cards in existence. If I had a time machine I would have scooped up the Scott's set as it was a Steal. Steal in the fact that if a Scott's Mikan ever goes on auction again it will go for $10k-$15k regardless of condition. The Scott's in the lot were all NRMT which is unprecendented. A NRMT Scott's Mikan could, conceivably, sell for $25k+ in itself. A Mikan Royals still on the box is the other "BIG" non-mainstream card. The only example sold for $10k awhile back, but is about to be privately sold for $20k. BMW sports also claims to have a set and the proofs for the set. Although BMW has proven stuff to Mark Murphy, they have never provided me with pictures of anything they said that I doubted. (e.g., a Topps Test uncut sheet and Proofs for the Scott's cards).

  • Mastros does not have the topps lot in their computers yet ... Don't know what that means.
  • Jeff,

It turns out that my friend Kevin whom I thought was consigning the three above Topps basketball sets had a change of heart at the last minute just before he went to the Post Office! The last time I saw him a few weeks ago, he had everything all neatly packed in a big Priority Mail box, and he was to go to the Post Office the following day. When I spoke to him last night, he told me he couldn't bear to part with the cards and got very emotional. This happened to me once, only I went a step further: I had already shipped a couple of graded cards which I asked to be mailed back because I changed my mind.

here we go again, rumors , we always get tricked by the rumorsimage
  • jeff,
how's the computer situation? any news on when the site will be up again?
  • Completely understand,

Tell your friend that if he is working on completing his Topps Test set that my friend just bought an ungraded set that he is splitting up. I am buying a lot of cards from him in order to get me closer to completing my set. I may have a double or two left over so if he has a double or two ... a trade could be in the works. Otherwise, he may be able to purchase some raw test from my friend.

  • Murcerfan,

You are exactly 4 days too late. I needed money and sold 2 of my commons for $2,250 each.

    Jeff
  • Murcerfan, (but I also included about a thousand dollars of Kahns cards in the deal) so the Scott's really went for about $1,750 each (I bought the commons at $1,250).

Dbj77, the computer is shot. If we could remove the world of "primary hard disk failures" then the site would be up and running. My main problem is that I am unsure of the last time I backed up my website. My computer crashed a few months ago and I quickly backed up all my pictures and the current version of my guide. Let me tell you though, in about two weeks time I am going to make a post on my site about a find that will positively reshape the basketball card hobby. It will take me some time to figure out how to edit the HTML directly from work, but let me tell you ... everyone will appreciate this find. It is truly miraculous.

As for the person saying "rumors" ... if you don't believe anything I say ... I can take a picture with my digital camera and send it to you. I can also give you the names of the people who have bought cards from me (and vise versa) to confirm prices. Moreso, if you don't believe that the Bread Labels sets are going to be on Mastros ... CALL THEM!!! Fact: The largest collector of non-mainstream basketball cards in the world got out of the hobby two Friday's ago and that is why you are going to see a bunch of oddball cards surface over the next year.

Jeff , no need to get fiesty. i was referring to skycap. davillio was crusified on here for stating things that did not happen. you will notice the wink on my post. I know who you are and your knowledge of basketball cards. i thought it was funny about packing the cards up in the post office box and then they didn't make it, meaning the cards that were supposed to be sent in did not turning it into a rumor that they were going to be in the next mastro auction until it was cleared up

  • Pack Collector,

Sorry for said feistiness. I didn't get out of work last night until 4:30 am and only got a few hours of sleep (I mean ... I did have to watch the last Bachelorette episode). Anyway, I will have a huge post on here in about two/three weeks time that you will greatly appreciate.
