Is this a lamination error, planchet flaw, or something else?

I took this 91P JFK out of a mint set. It is an average coin - nothing special, but the divet (for lack of a better word) between the 9s caught my eye. It is not a raised bump like a die error, but an actual depressed area on the coin. I should probably know what this is called, but am sure someone here will! The best I can think of is a lamination error (but doesn't look quite right for that) or a bad planchet. Thanks!

And here is a close-up:

Defective planchet or strike thru. Had a Lincoln same way, but part of the strike was visible in the "crater", so it was labeled "Defective planchet" by PCGS. Anything in the "crater", like part of the '9'??
  • I've seen a similar Morgan, but it was wierd b/c the crater should have eaten up part of a letter, but instead, it kinda molded around the letter... hard to explain...

No, the crater is completely sommoth inside. The 9 does not actually go into it.

Eh? "sommoth?" I mean smooth! The 9 stops right on the rim.

Ok, no design elements in the "crater". Any foreign material that you can see under a scope? If so, could be a strike-thru by an object stuck to the die. Note: You've about exhausted my knowledge here.

Nothing at all in there. Thanks for the input!

Looks like a classic struck-through error to me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yep, strike through. And a pretty cool coin example.

Yep. I'll third that it is a strike thru. Pretty neat. JFKs are tough to find with ANY errors.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Wow. This one was in my sell as quickly and cheaply as possible pile, but I thought it looked a little different. It is the first error coin of any type that I have found personally. Now, I don't know quite to do with it!

  • Trade you a clipped Roosie for it!

Naw. Not big into Roosies. But a trade seems a good way to go if I decide not to keep it. I may move it over to BS&T if I think it will find a better home.
