What to put in my Dansco Type set?

I just picked up a Dansco type set to start filling. Just out of curiousity, what coin do you all think I should go after first? I'm going to start with pretty low grade stuff. Whatever the forum says, I'll try and do. If you want, I'll fill the whole thing based on forum consensus. Just thought it might be fun. I do have a limited budget, so be kind. I consider $100 a lot for a coin, but also do want to fill the album (I know some will be hard to get). I can post pics as I go. What do you think?

  • Get the toughest ones first...I'm stuck right now on the seated liberty dollars, so if you can get them early you'll be golden...

    Oh yeah...Go Jackets...
  • Early half and large cent coins in decent condition. VF-XF if possible and graded if possible. You can find some decent raw ones if you have a fairly large coin dealers in your area. I'm not so lucky.

You should be able to fill half a dozen of the holes out of pocket change, and probably, if you have even a passing interest in US coins, you already have another dozen or so of the types in your collection, almost every collector has at least one Morgan dollar for example, if not I'd complete the 20th century types first and then move back in time as your experience and budget grows. So do you mean what tougher coin should you go after first? Maybe the capped bust half dollar or quarter?

I started my Dansco Type set as a fun distraction from building a set of Peace Dollars in 64+. It has now turned into an ugly wonderful horrible inspiring and intriguing task I can never escape thinking about. Good Luck.

Oh, and If you want easy/non expensive here's a list!!

    1) Get a proof set from your birth year (or other significant year) and BAM you have either all of the "to date" or "silver" holes filled of current design. (depending on how old you are) depending on the year you pick, should cost about 10-20 bucks. Then, grab another good year for the opposite kind. IE grab one clad and one silver.

    2) Get a 1976S Silver three piece proof set, and BAM you filled the Bicentenial section on the backpage. Those three in particular look great in the dansco, and you can usually get them for 10-15 bucks on ebay.

    3) www.wayneherndon.com has lots of nice quality inexpensive lincoln cents so you can do the 1909VDB, the 1909-1958 wheat back, the 43 steel for less than fifty bucks total if you don't mind common dates. (I chose 58 as it was last year of wheats and my moms birthyear)

    4) Grab a super high graded shiny Jefferson silver nickel (42-45) from almost anywhere (cheaperslabs.com works) and BAM, you nailed one more hole. (about 15 bucks)

    5) A pretty, shiny common date morgan is pretty easy and should cost about 30-40bucks

    6) You can grab a pretty, shiny merc dime almost anywhere for not too much.

    7) Decent AU Walkers and Franklin halves are everywhere for 25 bucks or less.

    8) You can grab two of the different kinds of IHC's in nice shape for cheap.

    9) Silver Eagles, SBAs, and SAC dollars are so easy and cheap its ridiculous, hell, you can find a nice looking sac and SBA at the post office for face value.

There, if you follow all these, you've spent somewhere below 200 bucks, and have a bunch of holes filled with Nice, decent shape coins, on all different pages, and in pretty nice shape. Now get to it!!! It's fun!!

PM me if you have any questions about anything.

Keep in mind too, that I'm not saying you should do all of these at one time, but it sure is a fun way to start........its a lot more satisfying to work on if you've got holes filled. Makes it a less daunting task.

Personally I prefer to buy first year of issue coins for Type Sets.
If the first year is common & cheap I'll pick the scarcer mintmark from that first year. If the scarcer mintmark costs too much like for example the Washington 25¢ where the D&S cost a lot I'd go with a high grade P Mint in MS-something if I were making a higher graded set or I would go with circs in @ least FINE in the D&S if I were making a circ set.
Whatever kind of set it is I like to use similiar grades for all the coins, within reason of course.
To me that makes a well matched set. You can get most coins for a Dansco Type for less than $100 and matter of fact a few of the coins will be "too nice" for a Dansco @ $100.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Well, I went through my coin stash, and filled some holes. Album is about 2/3rds complete, but about half of it is cull. It is a lot more fun than I thought. I can see how type collecting can be addictive. I'm already thinking about upgrades, and what to put in the 4 commerative half slots.

  • Another thing I did with mine...I bought a lot of slabs, particularly ANACS, of the coin series I wasn't real familiar with. Had no problem cracking them for the album...so if you're concerned about buying raw for the album, that's a way to attack it. As Baley can confirm, the set looks so nice in that album...

start at the bottom and work up there are 3 half cent bust types. the budget will keep you away from the flowing hairs. the drape busts are fairly cheap in G and VG grades. than you can for the 1,2,3,5,10,20 25,50 centers and than the dollars. I added U.S.and Confederate fractional notes to my type because I like the idea of a 3,5,15,25, and 50 notes with the coins.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

Always looking for nice type coins

    my local dealer
  • I started my type set pretty much the way others have described here. I went to my local coin shop and told them I wanted to start by filling as many of the holes as possible with nice circulated coins (no proofs) for about a $100 total. I already had a mint set, so with the coins I bought that day I had one page filled (the last one, of course) and one or two coins on almost every page.

My local dealer tells me that most of his customers are completing type sets and he encourages all of his customers to put one together. He's a great guy, enjoys the hobby, and I think he likes working with the type set collectors the best.

For the moderns, I'm collecting the year 2003 since that's the year I started the set. This set can be overwhelming, so I focus on one series at a time. Now I'm working on the small cents. One more to go. The nice thing about taking small sections at a time is that it gives you a sense of accomplishment. And I'm taking my time...the best advice you can get.

I'm having a great time with this set. It's going to be the only set I will work on for a very long time...along with a few VAM's along the way.

Here's my small cents so far:

  • I actually have my small cents filled, but three of them are VG, 2 XF, and one uncirc. Definitely need to do some upgrading. One of the neat things about this is I found I had some coins I didn't even know about. I filled a lot more of the album then I thought I could. I don't think I am going to put any coins with a date later than 2000. I want to keep it true to 1801-2000 type coins.
