Do you think this 64 Roosie could go PR70?

Do you think this coin could go to PR70 status? Thie picture turned out a little dark but I find no marks or haze on the coin. A 64 proof set I got recently had exceptional coins, no cameo stuff but a very nice set.

At PCGS, no wayimage I'm not bashing your coin, but PCGS just DOES NOT give out PR70s on older proofs! It takes an act of god just to get a DCAM out of them!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Even if it were PR70, there is no way one could make such a judgement from your scan (or most any other scan).

I have to agree with Marty, Charleston Heston couldn't pull a PR70 from PCGS and he was Moses from crying out loudimage

Since I already have a 64 Washington PCGS PR70, I thought I would go on a holy grail type hunt for a complete set of 64's in PR70. I don't know off hand what the pop report is for that year but hey, it's something to do. Besides, I usually enjoy the search more than the completion.

Not a chance. Is the coin actually dark, or is that just your pic?

Did you make the coin or buy it in the PR70 holder?

The coin is not dark, it's just my picture. I am trying to get a handle on taking good pictures. I have a Nikon CoolPix 8500 and three mini spotlights with 40 watt Reveal bulbs. I am fairly new at coin photography so I am trying different things.

Each of us must have a quest and a goal. If this is yours I think it's great and you are in for a challenge that could pay big rewards on a personal noteimage

I bought the coin in a PCGS holder. Just for grins I just checked the POP report for 64 proof coins in PCGS PR70

    Cent - pop 10
    Nickel - pop 7
    Dime - pop 79
    Quarter - pop 32
    Halve - pop 26

So it is possible to complete the set, just may take me a long long time, if they can even be found.

  • I had a PR70 '64 cent once.

I both bought and sold it in the $200 range. Seemed that since it wasn't cameo,
    it wasn't worth much.

A collection of 64's could go cameo or just straight proof. Since there are no PRCAM or PRDCAM 70's I am going straight PR. I realize Cameos are worth more and are more popular but out of sight price wise in highest grades. I want a PR70 set for my own enjoyment mostly. For some reason I can't describe, I really the 1964 coins, always have.

If you're using reveal light bulbs, hairlines won't show up--they're terrible for grading.

What kind of bulb would be best for getting the most realistic reproduction? Just regular incandescents? Sunlight?
