Got a question about grading non-sports

Ok- got a set of Six Million Dollar Man and the color is not the best. It looks as if they sat in the back of a Grand Torino! The thing about it is that I opened the 2 boxes to make the set and that was the way that the cards came out. I do have some with deep colors.....but here is the question- if the corners and edges are 9's, what will happen with the grade with cards that the colors just suck?

  • You might think it's a 9, they might grade them a 7 or an 8.
Color shouldn't matter unless they are terribly faded.

  • So that brings me to the next set of questions-

Do they have a reference to go by stating that this was 90% the norm or something to that affect?

Would it be smarter to send in the whole set that looks like that and let it be assumed that was the way it is supposed to be or take my chances and sprinkle them in?

    Thanks for the help!

Tough calls. I am guessing without looking that PSA has not graded any, or just perhaps a few, of these cards. Nonetheless, if the cards look nice to you outside of the coloring, I would probably just go ahead and send them in and try for the best especially given the $5.00 special. I just sent in about 50 1978 KISS Donruss cards for grading. PSA has only graded four of these cards total. I am curious myself how they will handle them.

That brings up another question: I wonder if the graders read the message boards? Hopefully not. My identity would be disclosed by reference to the 50 KISS cards. I am willing to bet it is the one and only order sitting in the shop containing the KISS cards! Turn away now graders (unless of course your peeking will help get me 10s.. image).
  • Well at least you and I are in the same boat....the problem is that I am sitting on about 25 that PSA has graded where the color is really nice. But I don't know how long ago they were graded......

On the set registry special I know it is a 25 card minimum....but is that 25 all from the same set? I have a set of auto cards that had 15 in the set. So does that qualify for the special as long as I add in a minimum of 10 more more?

  • I've submitted some really oddball stuff for grading - some regional Saints sets and some non sport - that had never been graded before my submission. In most cases I've had better luck when I have submitted a lot of cards from the same set. My guess is that when the grader sees 50 cards (for example) from the same set and they all have the same issues - poor color, rough cut, etc - they give the benefit of the doubt that the problem is universal to the set rather than just a few cards.

  • That's what I was and am thinking.....all 66 look the same. So I think I'll go for it and make sure that all the other factors are not an issue. Should be fun to see what happens.....
