Rubber Band Marks...Ouch!

Hi Folks...I just purchased a lot of raw cards through the mail from a fairly major dealer I've done business with in the past. I'm working on a '70 Topps Baseball set and out of the 20 or so cards I purchased, all but one were dead on NM-MT (as described) and will fit the set I'm working on. (Planning on submitting my set to PSA after I get married in June and no longer have to save for my wedding).

At any rate, the one card that I was disappointed in was number 580 Pete Rose. It's got barely noticeable rubber band marks on both the left and right edges...Centering is 60/40, but the corners would probably get this card a 7, not including the rubber band marks. I really have been happy with all the stuff this guy has sent before, but am really ticked as I've been waiting on a nice example of this card for a long time.

My question to you folks is, based on your submission experience, what is the best a card with rubber band marks can get from PSA? They really are hard to spot, and I see nothing explicitly about rubber band marks in PSA grading standards. I'm thinking if it might go PSA 7, I might hold onto it. I think I remember Beckett saying the best a card with rubber band marks can be is Ex-Mt, but I know Beckett is more or less irrelevant these days....and I'd never submit to those jokers anyway.

At the minimum, I think this guy missed the mark on corners alone, and I'm inclined to think I'm gonna send it back. Thanks in advance for any of your thoughts and experiences.

  • Charlie - If you have dealt with this seller on a regular basis. I would try to send the card back. The seller probably just missed the rubber band indentions ( I assume they are faint). If he values your continued business, he should have no problem giving you a refund on the card.

  • Thanks for the words of wisdom Jay. The seller does have a liberal return policy. This card really doesn't fit my set, so I think it's going back tomorrow.

I'm working on a '67 set too, like yourself...Lotsa fun, but those high numbers are a real bear.

Wouldn't expect any better than a PSA 5 with the rubber band marks.
The seller probably didn't notice the marks if they're that hard to see.

I have a card that I've almost submitted twice,
but ended up not doing so because of faint rubber band marks.
