Watch out for this ebay scam

I got a call from a gentleman who was the #3 underbidder on one of my recent ebay items. He received an email from somebody purporting to be "tone lover" offering the coin because the high bidder had backed out. Problem is that the high bidder has not backed out and I sent no such message.
The scammer did not send it through ebay's official "second chance" offer but he does know my email address. That's not a matter of national security, lots of people know it. I changed my ebay password just in case, no problem there. I contacted ebay but they said since the message originated from outside their system there's nothing they can do. I alerted all underbidders in case they got the same message. I also wrote the person from who the message originated to let them know I'm aware of their activities.
So if you receive any of these so called second chance offers, be sure it originated from the ebay system and if you have any doubts contact the seller directly, not by responding to the email that was sent to you. Word up!
