Is this Merc overgraded? (eBay)

Is this Mercury Dime (labeled MS66FB) overgraded, and if so, by how much? Auction

It looks very well struck, but does that make up for the gash on the lower sticks? Or do you think that the gash doesn't lok that bad with coin in hand?

I know that it is hard to grade from a photo, but your input is appreciated.

If the luster is appropriate, I can see 66FB on this. My bet is that the hit on the reverse is what kept it from a 67.
  • I think that "gash" kept it from being a -67 also. Other than that I don't see anything that could keep it from being a -67 other than a few small nicks. I don't think its overgraded.
  • It looks 66 to me....I would say it's graded right

  • Hard to tell from pics, but I'd bet it has blistering luster.
The "gash" as kamehameha called it, does take away from the overall appearance (and obviously the grade I think).
I couldn't own that without painting the reverse of the slab flat black.. my eye would be drawn to that gash and haunt me in my dreams. But, that's just me.

Overgrade? Not possible. PCGS never overgrades!

  • Thanks for your input.

I am looking forward to the new PCGS Grading and Counterfeit Detection Book coming out, so that I can get a better handle on these high grade coins. March 9th.

The book will help, but going to an ANA grading class is like jumping the learning curve. I went to one and I recommend it highly. I was planning on going to the advanced one this year but finances didn't work out (too many other projects in the way) but I think right now I will plan for next year.

You can do a lot better for that date. The Gash is huge for a Merc and you will not be happy at all.

    JMHO.

Properly graded? If so, it would mention the extra set of full bands gashed into the reverse....MS 64FB.image
