Recipe for a "silver" cent?

The latest issue of numismatic news had a letter from a reader that stated you could produce a "silver" cent by soaking a regular cent in Worschershire sauce.

So, of course I immediately placed a late nintys cent into a small bowl with some Worschershire sauce.

I'll be hot-danged. After an hour it is beginning to show signs of the zinc material that the cent is made from.

Sort of makes me wonder how good that stuff is for your insides?

I let a nice shiny 2001 cent soak in some Worschershire sauce overnight, but see no diference.

Maybe I am using the wrong brand?

Sell it on e-bay as a "Rare varity" and make big money with it!!!

It's the acid that does it. Though I haven't tried it, I would be surprised if a lemon juice or Coca-Cola overnight soak did the same thing. Don't worry about your stomach. It's full of its own acid, so a little extra won't hurt. Hey, there's an idea. Swallow a Zincoln, let your stomach acid do the work and... oh, never mind...

Am I correct that the sauce is acidic? Most likely, any acid will work.

W-sauce contains vinegar and soy sauce and both are weakly acidic.
