GATEWAY CACHET---1ST TIME POST....

First time poster, great board. Need some help. A few years ago I purchased a few hundred GATEWAY AUTOGRAPHED CACHETS,Mantle,Musial, 500 Hr club and many others. Is there any interest in these at all anymore.? They seem to be very reasonable to buy on ebay. Also, is there any type of price guide on the market for these. Hope to add some good posts in the year to come. thanks

  • I've always wanted to ask the same question. Years ago they were quite popular, there's some guide out there that identifies the rare ones. Do you have the 79 Yaz AS game or 3000 Hits? Does PSA, SGC, etc. grade these?

I've been collecting Gateways since 1979, and have the complete collection. I have noticed that on ebay, they tend to go for insanely low prices, considering that they are authentic autographs (Mantle, Williams, Mays, etc) for well under $100 and guys like Ryan, Seaver, Brett and Schmidt for well under $50. Many times, the envelopes won't even get a bid at an opener of $20.

I think the Krause SCD Guide to Sports Collectibles lists all of the Gateway cachets, but their prices are ridiculous. I remember looking at it and seeing the Bob Forsch first no-hitter envelope, which only has, I think, 108 envelopes issued, priced at $15.00. When it was auctioned off by Gateway Stamp Co back in the 1980's, it went for a little over $100. The current value of it is easily over $1,000. I remember seeing one auctioned on ebay late last year that went for around $600 or so.

All I know is if I didn't have all the envelopes already, I would be making a killing buying as many as I could on ebay.
