Busted 2 Boxes of SP Legendary Cuts...

and got maybe $25 worth of stuff...really awful. Game-used pieces I got were a Berra Bat and Winfield jersey. Anyone on here had much luck with these?

  • No, I'm had rotten luck as well. I opened 3 boxes and got nothing worth over about $10.00 I have always thought that an unethical dealer could open a case and then open boxes until he gets to the cut card and then sell the rest of the boxes on eBay. I don't know if that's me being paranoid or if that really goes on, but I've never gotten a cut card and by now (between the 2001, 2002, and 2003 boxes) I should have. I just stick to buying the cuts because the boxes are like buying a lottery ticket.

I've heard that Dave and Adam's is a good source for boxes, but I've never tried them. Based on their reputation, I would buy from them before I would buy from a stranger on ebay if I wanted to purchase unopened material.

BTW, couldn't the card companies solve this problem by inserting auto's/gu/etc in a completely random manner?
  • I'm looking for a Lance Richbourg cut signature from 2002 SP Legendary Cuts, numbered to 3. Anybody know of one out there somewhere?

Not sure how many boxes come in a case but at Dave and Adams you are limited to 6 boxes. Which means if there are more than 6 boxes to a case....you cannot buy a sealed case.

    HMMMMMM.........
  • I think it was 14 boxes per case if I'm not mistaken. The cut card out of my case was Hal Newhouser which was barely worth the box price anyways. I'm really surprised that Dave and Adam's would pull that kind of stuff. I'm sure they are buying random boxes from people and they are well aware that most have had the AUTO cuts pulled. No other explanation unless that is a standard policy with all boxes. Besides, if all you're doing is buying a box to get rich off the cut card then you shouldn't be buying boxes anyways, try to have fun every once in a while with it.

  • I agree that "getting rich" shouldn't be your primary motive (although it would be nice). However I'd say about 50% of the cost of one box is just that 1/16 chance of getting a cut card. So if a dealer knows that the box won't contain one, they're ripping people off since a "cold" box is only worth about $40-$50. I have heard that Dave and Adam's is good. The people that I was refering to is the people that sell boxes alongside their jersey and cut cards on eBay; so they're opening some boxes and selling the rest. Also a sealed case goes for about $1,600 - which is $100 a box, while loose boxes go for as little as $80 each. So much for saving in bulk.

BTW, gatorcollector, I have seen a Lance Richbourg 02 cut card on ebay about a month ago. I think it went for $1,800 but I'm not totally sure.

How can it be fun to spend over $100 for a box and then pull out $15 or so in return? Most people are quick to list their awesome pulls, but on the flip side, we have no idea how much $$$ they have pi$$ed away in the process. Wax is garbage these days. Sure you can pull that one really valuable card, but odds are you won't. I 've said it before and I will say it again. Wax opening has turned the average collector into a strak raving mad gambler the way they insert these tough inserts.

Anyone that says that they have ever made more $$$ out of opening wax than they have lost, should also have a story of a great big fish they caught. I know it's fun to think of the possibility of pulling that great card, I am with most people on that. But the utter disgust I have with wax after losing my a$$ on a expensive box or two immediately after pulling a Bert Blyleven game used card as my big pull from the box , is not worth it. Just think, out of your average 14 box case of SP Legendary Cuts, 13 out of 14 people will most likely be disappointed, right? I don't think the card company is pleasing the average collector with odds like that.

I drew the line when I purchased a box of SP Authentic Basketball a few years ago looking for the Steve Francis or something like that and instead I pulled some bum rookie that wasn't even ever going to rise in value. I do understand that not everyone could pull that big star card, but I am just saying that it was that box that made me realize how much $$$ I was pi$$ing away on wax. I was gambling every single time I bought a box. Top it all off, I'm a sore loser so my frustration usually was taken out on the neighborhood stray dog. Just kidding.

I always say, "To each his own", so if you are a very lucky person or you have alot of enjoyment spending your money on something that will more than likely give you a poor return on your money, then hey, wax is for you. I will recommend one thing though. Just for craps and giggles, keep a sheet with the $$ you spend on your next box or boxes until you get up to around $500 or so. Also keep track of what you pul from those boxes in the meantime. Sit back for a minute and look at what you are shelling a ton of $$$ on. Screw Beckett values also. If you want to see what your card is really worth, check Ebay to see what they are selling for.

Stay away from boxes on Ebay unless you know the seller and have been pleased before. Buying loose boxes from a Ebayer who also owns a store scares me. You do a track of that guys purchases and see that he has bought several '02 Elite Alexis Rios rookies, but yet he has several loose boxes on hand to sell from that product. That would leave me to believe that he had a full case, opened a few random boxes until he hit 1 or 2 Alexis Rios rookies, and then he listed the other boxes that were left on Ebay giving people hope that they may pull one of those Rios rookies. That's just me. If you only average 2- 3 Rios's per case, and he hit those 3 after box 6, he would have about 8 garbage boxes to sell on Ebay. I know that there are other prospects in some boxes, but this was a specific example. Loose boxes on Ebay are suspicious to me. Just my paranoia.

P.S - KallmaloneSay - I only quoted you to ask you where the fun was in losing $$$ on expensive wax. We all know it's fun to pull the big card, but that doesn't happen as much as you lose.
7 MVP awards, the single season HR record, career walks record, single season walks record, 700HR/500SB, and two batting titles near 40 years old. How can one argue that those aren't stats of the greatest to ever play the game??? All this and there is still more to come!!!! Bonds:2005 NL MVP. Or are you going to doubt him again?

I agree with the Roach. I am a recovering new wax addict. I flirted more money away than I care to think of on new wax during the 2001 season. While I did not keep track of my purchases, I can say with confidence my return did not equal what I paid. Since that time through today my new wax purchases have dropped off so much to the point they are almost non existent. I have even given up the Topps Heritage product which is probably one of the better new unopened wax. I too became angry after time and time again spending over 100 for a box and not having anything to show for it. While I know many people enjoy the thrill and excitement for new wax, and I can't knock their enjoyment, I will stay away outside of the very rare small purchase. Besides, if I am going to blow a bunch on unopened cards, I am now finding it more enjoyable to purchase unopened material from the mid to late 70s. At least if I don't get a star card, I can usually get cards to upgrade my sets. Oh, how I yearn for the days of my youth when you could buy a pack of cards for well under 50 cents!

To those who brave to purchase and open new wax, good luck!

Geez, I wish. I opened about 25 boxes and there are probably 3 or 4 rookies that I didn't pull, and of course Rios was one of them. My big man was Chone Figgins, I think I pulled 4 or 5, boy was I lucky. Actually at the price I bought them at it didn't really matter, you get usually $100 in Beckett value even out of the absolute worst boxes, and being a dealer who owns a store and does shows all over I actually can move Figgins in SoCal, I met Jeriome Robertson's uncle in San Fran, Wille Harris' cousin here in Vegas, Anthony Ferrari's brother in San Fran,...

It's really hard to just try and make money the way you guys do it by thinking you can go to ebay and make money. If you are a dealer who does shows you will very, very rarely lose money if you pick a bad box of wax at the right price. With me having a card store I pretty much will never lose on a box of wax. I can move a bunch of cards in the dollar box, I've got Minnesota fans, state of Texas fans, Angels fans, Raiders fans, 49ers fans, ... The only boxes I can remember losing on this year with my given situation was a box Sweet Shot basketball (although I saw many of my customers come in and get sweet boxes) and I had a 2002 SPx Football box sitting on the shelf so long even after I discounted it that I had to rip it (maybe the reason nobody bought it was becuase it was so bad).

So most of you guys who just deal on ebay a boad box might give you $10 for your relic card, $8 for your SP's, and $10 for your commons on ebay. For a card store owner with that exact same box I would get $20 for the relic, $25 for the SP's and $30 for the commons via $1 box and team collectors. I'm not saying this to be a jerk or brag, but you've got to realize you're selling situation when opening wax. Listing everything on ebay in a box will bring X amount, selling everything if you're a dealer at a show might bring 1.5X, and being a store owner might bring 2X on a bad/decent box. Now if you get the super sweet pull like the Babe Ruth cut signature, then I as a store owner am in the exact same spot as you where I just throw that puppy on ebay and hope two fat cats shoot that thing to the moon.
