Are these Seated Dollars Counterfeit?

I hate to bring this to everyone's attention because if they are real, I'll lose my opportunity for a good deal! Anyway, they both appear to have the same degree of toning and wear. They look to be authentic ... but then I don't know the telltale features of a counterfeit. Opinion?

Seated Dollars

Thanks

O feedback. "I don't know anything about coins." Forget about them...not worth the risk.

The proportion on those images doesn't look correct to me (for a dollar coin). It almost seems like the proportion I would expect to see on a half dime. The head of liberty looks too large in proportion to the diameter of the coin.
  • My feeling is BOGUS.........

Seated dollars of many dates are counterfeited..... 1871, and 1872 being commonly faked since they're relatively common coins and are typically bought in lower grades by beginning collectors for inclusion in a type set..........It's easier to fool a novice, and therefore more profitable for the counterfeiter if more of his/her fakes are sold as the genuine article.

At first glance, note how the color seems "off"......... Now internet shopping from pics isnt easy, and the colors vary, but a scam artist knows this and can use it to their advantage.... The color in your links is typical for a counterfeit as the alloy used for the counterfeits differs from the genuine article and different oxides form giving it a different un-natural appearance......

Another PUP (pick up point) is the width of the flat surface outside the denticles....... Again, we're dealing with scans or photos which can sometimes skew perspective, but if you compare the width of this area to the coin shown here.... Thanks Ernie , you may be able to see the difference........

While the piece you show doesn't exhibit the very common PUP of the diagonal nick in the obverse shield which is typical of the Asian counterfeits, it most definitely is a fake.

The seller is registered for 2 weeks..............REDF FLAG !!!!!! He distances himself from the issue of authenticity in his description....... RED FLAG !!!!!

    RUN AND HIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edited to add......... If you could weigh the piece, you'd find it about 15-20% underweight........ Something that wouldnt have happened at the mint.

Andy, if you think they are real, I have some other SDs to sell you image

The part that got me is that the seller says he doesn't know if they're fake or not. I think someone on the up and up would just post 'em and not say something goofy like that.

I never said that I thought that the seller is knowledgable. I said that the coins look like they're probably real.

    Andy,

I agree with you that they awfully good. I can't quite put my finger on it, but they seem ever so slightly off to me. Plus, I admit I am swayed by the seller's self-professed ignorance.

They don't have enough dings and nicks? Could that be what looks off?

EVP - I couldn't put my finger on it either. But after staring at a genuine coin for awhile, I think the problem is that the distance between star 7 and Liberty's nose is smaller on these coins than on genuine coins.

That could easily just be the result of a judicious whizzing. Which, BTW, could account for some flattening and blurring of details. I can't say for sure from the photos what was done to the coins, but I also can't say that they're fakes. I still think that they're probably real coins.
