I've been asked to give seminars at an upcoming show!

I was asked to give a couple of seminars at the Oklahoma Numismatic Association show on April 30 and May 01. The topics I have been asked to cover are grading MS Lincolns and the die varieties of the Lincoln cent. I will be doing each of them twice, once each day of the show. How cool is that??

I have started working on the presentations and will print a 20-30 page guide to hand out to participants. I will also have sample packets together for the participants. The Lincoln grading sample packet will have some differently graded MS Lincolns, and the die variety sample packet will have a few attributed RPMs and doubled dies to get people started.

We have also been given a table at the show, so I plan on taking a laptop with wireless internet to show off the site to people. I hope to also be able to get a couple of educational booklets together and printed by then so the interested people that show at the table can have something to help them along in collecting Lincolns by die.

Exciting!

That's really cool. I wish I knew enough about any one subject to be able to give a talk on it.

Could you load the site directly onto the laptop, instead of having to wonder if the wireless internet connection will work?

Say hello to Scott Thomas for me if you see him there. He runs one of the three coin shops in Edmund, OK, population about 70,000.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Keets - I've been preparing myself for it for a long time, and have done a lot of talks to small groups at coin shops and a couple of coin clubs, but never at a regional show. I will be fully prepared for this one, though - I just bought (before I knew about this) all the software I would ever need for doing presentations and print reprographics (to the tune of over $2000) just to start getting into writing my own book about Lincolns. This seminar will give me a great opportunity to learn how to use this software appropriately.

I have already started the presentation on Die Varieties and am currently 11 slides into the presentation and it looks great! I figure the finished work will have 30-40 slides each which will take about half an hour to present. I plan to spend the additional 15 minutes giving a practical test in grading to allow the participants to see what they learned, and invite them to my table where they will be able to look at some of the Lincoln cent die varieties through the microscope. It should be great!

Because the site is written in PHP, a language that is server parsed, and since it runs on a database that would have to be copied to the compter (plus install and prep the engine for it) unfortunately it would take a lot of foreplanning and work ahead of time to turn the laptop into a server that would handle the job - much easier to hook it up to the internet, and away we go!

Anyway, a secondary purpose for having the table would be to show off the other sites we developed to attempt to drum up another customer or two for a site. Having the internet available would afford a certain amount of freedom that would be difficult to impossible without it.

As for Scott - I know him, I'll see him there I'm sure.

Thanks guys. I have a friend from OKC who has offered to show up and try to videotape the presentation. I can't make copies of videotapes, but if the video turns out nicely perhaps someone else here could volunteer to copy the video for others here who are interested. We'll see how things go on that end of it.

As for all else, I have begun the arduous task of putting together some pamphlets on the subject. I barely got into it and found myself six pages deep, typing away. I guess they'll turn out to be at least 40 pages each.

CD: Congrats ... I admire your scholarly and workmanlike approach to Lincolns, and the great info you provide at your web site ... and I don't even collect the things ( well, I do have a few ... )
  • How long are these presentations? I assume about an hour each right. You have 15 min for a test and I assume a little time for Q&A and a few minutes to settle in and to get out at the end. then for the meat you haf a 40 slide presentaion that you are allowing 30 minutes for. I might suggest you cut back on the slides a little and spend a little more time on each of them. Thirty to 40 slides in 30 minutes is pushing it a bit. Every time the slide changes there are a few seconds of disorientation and then you present your information. Just about the time your audience is beginning to assimulate it wham they get hit with another slide. After 30 minutes they will probably be suffering from information overload and not retaining much. Most people who speak on a topic they really know and love tend to mindnumb their audience. Slow the pace down a little and it may do better.

Good info Conder - Thanks. I had planned on testing the presentations first on my family, then on the local coin shop to get reviews before finalizing it and going to the show with it. I'll have to time it on a number of tries to ensure I'm not trying to squeeze too much into a small time frame.
