33-34 Goudey question

I know a guy who wants to get rid of cards from these sets. He has some heavy hitters from the sets but most are damaged. Mostly just dinged corners(33 Ruth has 4 dinged corners) and a crease on some of the cards.

This is a silly question but i was wondering if i should get them graded regardless of condition?

Absolutely. There are too many fakes out there on the Goudey's, so authentication is key if you want to sell.

  • I thought that would be a no-brainer but i figured i'd ask anyways. Thanks for the input.
  • For 1934 Goudey's (assuming they aren't fakes) I have found that unless we are talking about Gehrig, Dean, Foxx, or Greenberg that it is not cost effective to get the card graded unless it will grade a PSA 5.

The demand for PSA 4's just isn't strong enough almost all of the time. 8's usually sell 200% of SMR or better.

Now on the fake issue I would not buy a raw card on eBay unless I am buying from a very reputable seller. At a minimum I demand someone with vintage card selling feedback in the multiple hundreds. There are a lot of fakes that were made in the 1960's from the heavy stock used by the Goudey company. When you have a fake for a particular card next to the real thing it is obvious. The fake looks like a high quality photo copy meaning the the colors are a little more dull than the real thing. I have found that the seal on the front of the card that shows the date is very blurry on these fakes.

Also, while the fake card backs have the exact same information as the real cards the print does not cover the same area as the real cards. The fake back is like 95% of the real back in terms of printed area. That said, compare the border sizes on the back and you'll see the difference.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • OrangeandTeal13,
Please send me a list of the 34's this guy's got and his asking price. Scan's would also be a plus if he has them.

    Thanks
