Classic, classic mistake! A coin REALLY does have three sides!

I made a big mistake the other day. A local dealer gave me "first shot" on a group of gold coins. One of the coins was a (common) a very pretty 1927 Saint in a 2X2 black capital plastics holder. Great luster, no distracting marks. I noticed two tiny black specks near the edge, ahh just small pieces of the holder stuck between the plastic. Grades probably a 64 maybe 65 on a good day. How much? $525. I take it and toss it into the buy pile. Later that night, I removed the coin from the holder(after I bought it). Those specks weren't specks, they were CARBON SPOTS THAT WERE ETCHED ALL OVER THE RIM OF THE COIN! Must be dozen spots.

Lesson: Always check the edge of a coin!
