$1200 '85 Topps Football DAN MARINO PSA 10!

I know this card is a low population card ...

1985 Topps Football DAN MARINO PSA 10 EBAY Auction

... but I was very surprised to see the realized price vs SMR of $675. image

When Rick originally listed the card, it was a 1 of 2 population. Then another PSA 10 was graded and listed on EBAY prior to this one ending. I wonder if those last prices were set snipes before the 1 of 3 PSA 10 was listed? Still, am amazing price for a modern football card!

  • Actually I had it pegged for about $1500. I am thinking the next one will be going about $800-$1000.
2X SMR is a pretty good price. That 1985 Marcus Allen PSA 10 went for about 2X last month, picked up by Joe.

Marcus, I thought your BINs on the couple 85 9s you have up right now are very reasonable. Repositioning in 1985 Football?

I saw that last night as well. Pretty amazing, especially when you look closely at the nice big scan provided, and you see some border chipping (especially at one corner). I would bet a lot of the 9's look very similar, at a fraction of that price.

  • BTW This Marino Auction ended last week.

The (2) that I have listed are doubles from my set. I have just started the '85 set after postponing it for a few years now - it is a very attractive set. The black borders on the EBAY scans seem flat, but having the cards in person the borders are very vibrant.

The recent PSA special has produced many PSA 9s and 10s in this set and '84. I was just about to e-mail you regarding the PSA 10 common on your website, however it's in pending status. image If you get anymore, please e-mail.

Within the last month, there has been a surge in the '85 population. I believe that the PSA 9s have increased by nearly 100, and the PSA 10s by 35. This set is one of the few '80s set worthy of assembling in PSA 9 that would still get respect due to the difficult black borders.

    Thanks,

    Marcus

Good luck on the '85 set bro. I screened all of my Marcus Allens and honestly did not find one I was sure would even garner an 8! I submitted my niest star card from my collection (an Elway), and it got an 8. I was thrilled to pick up the PSA 10 Allen - I was skeptical there would ever be one. You're right, high-grade '85s look very very nice. Not my favorite set though... after '89 Score and '62 Fleer I'm considering a 9/10 '84 set.

  • Yes the Fred Dean did just sell - should be posted as sold in a couple of days.
But no worry - I just received a couple of 20 box cases and I am sure to have more.

Not to downplay the 85 set, but on January 1, 2003 there were 28 PSA 10s and 641 PSA 9s with a total of 4310 graded.
You know the numbers today - but the thing is, the 9s and 10s will hold their value very nice over time because 1985 is expensive in raw form. I was also talking to a large wax dealer the other day and even the 80s wax is getting difficult to find compared to 2-3 years ago. Boxes still go frequently on eBay, but cases in public auction have not presented themselves.

The 85 set has a lot of participants, which also makes thing more fun.
I also agree whole heartedly, 1985 Topps FB is gorgeous. Jeremy

  • Have you seen the population on the Elway compared to the Marino in 85? Elway is tough!
Joe, the 84 set should be very economical in PSA 9/10. Jeremy

I knew that I would be going up against you on that card Joe, so I guess that I decided to wait for the next one. image You never know about the 1/1s pricing.

I have (3) PSA 10s from that set now. Unfortunately, that leaves me hungry for more!? Jeremy did you sell the PSA 10 for the $100 list price.

I really thought my Elway was a 9. I might just have to resubmit. When you break that '85 case, keep a look out for a nice Raiders team card (#281). I'm a buyer in 9 or (especially) 10.

Yeah, I've picked up a few '84 9's below submission costs. It's my second favorite set of the 80's, and although I told myself I would not do another set for a while, I'm inextricably drawn towards it image. I should e-mail the big submitters and see if I can get a deal on bulk reject 9's.

The '85 Elway is tough in PSA 9 or 10! I agree with you on the '85 and '84 sets is PSA, future wax or vending breakdown may be very expensive.

I would have started the '84 set by now, except for the centering issue. It's hard to find dead centered cards unless they are PSA 10s.

BKRITZ (Brian) has several '84 PSA 9s being listed on EBAY. He also has a large supply that can be sorted through for PSA submission. He will often take specific card requests if you e-mail him.
  • The buyer took advantage of a multi card purchase. 3 or more cards is 10% off. 5 or more is 15% off each. (Layaway does not apply).
I'll keep watch for those cards Joe - Brian is a good guy, have bought a lot from him recently.

    Best of luck boys! Jeremy

I have a bought a few cards from Brian, and he has taken a couple of requests from me image. Understandably however, he will not take requests for PSA 9's under submission prices. What I'm looking for is a bulk dealer who is making profit on the 10's he is popping and wants to liquidate the 9's.

  • The only year I can do that on is 1983 for commons, wish I had some 84, just don't. But things could change quickly.
Have you tried littledevildog? Vey friendly and they might be looking for something like that in 1984.

    Just a thought - Jeremy

  • I remember awhile back a 85 topps Elway in bgs 9.5 was on ebay and went for i think around $1200 and didn't meet the reserve the seller had. I'm big fan of both 85 and 86 topps football. Both tough in high grade. The 85 topps i've opened, i couldn't find anything worth grading. I think this next marino in 10 will go for more than this last on, if cr is in the mix again...............
  • The Elway did get over $1,500 and still didn't meet the reserve...crazy
  • I opened a cello box of 85 football at nationals looking for psa 9's and found about 70 cards worth submitting (keep in mind the I didn't have a loupe sitting at the psa counter) and received about 35 9's and the rest 8's. The box cost around $80 plus grading fees or $490 so I have about $570/35 or $16.28 into each psa 9 plus a bunch of 8's with very little value.

I offered the common psa 9's to a board member here for about $12 apiece and didn't even get a response to either of my emails. The market just isn't very good for these cards unless you hit a psa 10 of a superstar. I have two mint sets that have a lot of 9's in them and I can't hardly even justify submitting them on the special. If my hit ratio is 50% on 9's verses 8's and you can't even get $12 then it is a total waste of time and money. You are just gambling on getting a psa 10.

I agree that this is a great looking set.

  • Hello Wayne,

That board member is me! image You responded (replied) to the incorrect e-mail address. I send the original e-mail to you via my wife's ISOP. It clearly mentioned to send any list to my hotmail account. I made such a request because I travel and I can access a remote e-mail while on the road.

My wife has forwarded your e-mail from last night. I have went through your list and I think that need around 40 of the PSA 9s. The rest would be duplicates for me with the recent EBAY purchases. I will send you a revised want list, and no I did not "cherry pick" the low pops. The list will have a mix of stars and commons.

    Thank you,

    Marcus
