Dave Jacobs' 1969 set

With the recent updates to Dave's 1969 set reflected in the registry today, his GPA has shot up to a mind-boggling 8.74. This is all the more impressive when you consider that PSA lists the finest possible set rating at 8.60.

Very impresive job Dave but I'm afraid you might be waiting a while before you see a PSA 9 Brock.

Thanks, forget the Brock in 9 I would be sastified with one in 8. My set has a dang 6 in it. I bid 125 on the last 7 that came up and still lost. There is another 7 on now. As far as the set go's I got lucky and got to Dave Read first. I think I bought 98 cards from him. I am going to try and get to 9 but I think it may take a couple more years. The cards I do need now are mostly low pop and alot of them are in sets(Dude,Gaspipe, John C. Ron, and Ray B). I ok with that those are first class guys.

    Thanks!!

  • Dave,

Regarding 1969 PSA 9's (or 10's), the current population report shows:

    24 cards have a pop of 0
    67 cards have a pop of 1
    81 cards have a pop of 2

You may have to be patient on some of those but good luck. I spoke with Dave Read early on and I was able to get some nice 8s off of him. The deal will be complete soon and I'm looking forward to adding them to my set.

I just checked my set and I have
    27 pop 1's
    39 pop 2's
    2 10's that the 9's are pop 1 and 1 10 that the 9 is pop 0

I know I have a long way to go but I have 32 10's now and some of the 9's I have are weighted heavy. I think I can get to 9.0 by picking up the stars in 9 and making up the dif in pop 0's with 10's as far as I can tell I need 192 upgrades. i will keep plugging along and hope to get there sometime in 2005.

  • Dave,

What are your thoughts on the PSA 9 Jackson rookie that is closing tonight (the current bid is $7,000).
  • ARE WE ON THE ROAD IN THE PSA REGISTRY TO COLLECTING PSA GRADES RATHER THAN CARDS?? I KNOW THAT I AM GUILTY, BUT THE REAL COLLECTORS (STUMP, GASPIPE, GEMINT, DAVE READ, SANDERS, MARKEL, ET AL , MINUS ME.) , KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, AND DICTATE THE REAL VALUE OF THEIR COLLECTIONS. RON

Ron: While I appreciate the nod of acknowledgement----there are at least 10 guys I could name in 10 seconds whose names belong on that list before me. That aside, your point is correct!image

I'd like to add a public congrats to Dave's accomplishment after doing so off-line. His set is truely impressive. This set is so much more difficult than it should be which makes Dave's set rating that much more of an achievement.

Ron - I think we're all collectors with some consideration on investment value/return. If I ever sell my set, I hope I can sell it for more than I paid to build it. If not, I won't mind because I've had a lot of enjoyment building and viewing it over the years. I don't think there's anything wrong with chasing a high GPA as long as we are living by the "buy the card, not the holder" rule. I'm sure you own some lower grade cards that you'll never sell. That is the true collector in all of us. I still have the VG 1976 set I collected as a kid and will never sell it. However, for newer purchases, if we have the means, why not go for quality? image
  • 5 years ago when I started my set, an 8.74 was so far askew from reality that nobody dared dream of it for this set. In a year or so we saw Gaspipe assemble a 79% complete set hovering on 8.5 and subsquently sold at auction. There was some wonder after that whether someone would get there again.
Fast forward and look at the 69' registry today.
    Just incredible set efforts.
Congratulations again Dave...one can only dream...your making it a reality.

  • This set that Dave has built is hands down one of the greatest graded sets ever placed together. The 1969 Topps set is very tough to build in high grade. I know I do not have the experience that allot of people here do, but I think we all know about this issue's centering problems and some very hard to come by commons. I have no doubt that we all will see this set with an overall grade of 9.00 some day. Even though I am out of the 69 game, this set was my first love and I love to view the Hall of Fame page to view all the updates. This set is a great accomplishment!!! What is on the plate next Dave??? All 1960's sets in 9? I'll bet you can get it done.
