Would you average up?

There are 10 MS coins in holders (the entire population of a variety). Each is worth about $ 500..... You got lucky and bought one for $ 100. You've now found another, but it's $ 600.
DO YOU:
a) Buy the $ 600 one knowing that you overpaid but will have 20% of the population at an average of $ 350 each?
b) Accept owning 10% of the population with no downside potential.
c) Sell the $ 100 coin and turn a great profit.

If it's a recent discovery, I'd sell it as fast as I could. If it's a long established rarety accept owning 10% of the population with no downside potential.
(Sorry, that's my inner collector rearing its head)
Hi
Good question!
My answer is: It depends what you're trying to do.
Since no one has answered "a", I'll propose a scenario where "a"
is the best answer:
Suppose you're trying to corner the market on the variety, to minimize
the number of other people who can compete with your registry set.
In that case, I would argue that the measly $100 over market
price is worth it. Especially since you're now up to 20%.

You make an excellent point.
I "hoard" 1879s Rev 78 Morgans, but I need multiples of each VAM to do die sequence studies.
Other than that, it's highly speculative whether the rarity will hold up in 10~20 years down the road, and that's only when you would learn if you've "done well" in a financial sense in holding onto that coin or not.
If the rarity holds up, then there will be more people looking for the limited population, and the value will increase. More likely however, is that more will appear, and the "rarity" factor will decrease.
For a highly sought after Peace VAM, perhaps Mike Fey's auction would be a good venue to sell it to the VAM collecting community.
