How Did They Miss This One ???????????????

I just came across this auction and frankly was stunned not only by the seller's description, but the fact that a grader did not pick this up (let alone the huge gum stain on the rear). I checked several examples of the 1954 Bowman Erskine and there are not any marks in the upper left hand corner.

In case the pics do not upload, here is the address of the auction. Can any 1954 Bowman BB afficiandoes plz comment. Thanks.

What would concern me is obviously the apparent ink markings in the top-left. Not only in the existence of the marks, but in looking closely at those ink marks I find it pretty convenient that each mark ends RIGHT at the white border. Could the top border have been power erased to remove much of the pen markings?

Perhaps someone with more experience on altering cards can shed some light on this.

  • I have a '54 Bow. Erskine...no writing on mine. Seller claims the print is on "all of the cards". Unless I'm misunderstanding him, he's...how you say...lying.

Hey Dave, I juat registered a psa 6 E102 Wagner to start off this set for other vintage card collevtors with a bang.Ii's the much rarer fielding pose and finest one graded so far. You and Anthony need to jump on board and compete for the top spot on this set. You too have coin, all I have are cards I was able to save since childhood. I Have to save and roll my prnnies now to afford the new grading fee structure on cards worth over 1k. Join on and jam on it.image

  • I forgot, the seller of the 54 Erskine has unswerving integrity and is one super nice guy. He just got lucky having this card graded by a rookie grader. He,Kevin in no way would have had anything to do with unscrupulous grading and such. The fact that there is no bids on the card shows we know the true grade and score but I wish nothing but the best for this seller.

The Erskine is a legit card, and the wavy lines were part of the Jackie Jensen signature which was the card above it.
PSA nor the seller did anything wrong. Here is a scan to prove that point...jay

  • Very interesting point. However, there must have been a correction. Possibly a second printing which makes this card a "variation", or the revised card the "variation". Because on all my Erskines and others I have seen on EBAY, there is no loop from another autograph (Jensen). And I doubt it could be "off center" since that would not cause the print from one card to be on another card.

I think we discovered something here.
  • I agree...nice detective work, Jay!!! *bowing with my hat off*
  • Jay:

I went back and looked at all my 1954 Bowman Jensens, looked at current EBAY auctions and then looked at the closed auctions, and every Jensen has the bottom loops missing. So is the Erskine w/o the loops on the top the variation?????

HUBCAP - This situation ocurred as all the negatives say would overlap, then they split them to add white borders.
Obviously it was missed initally and some got through with it, they cleaned it up later and most look normal. So in essence this is a tougher variation. And with the primative printing methods that Bowman used, there are many other instances of stuff not being detected initally...jay
  • Jay
So did they ever change the Jensen to your knowlegde?
    Thanks

<< <i>So is the Erskine w/o the loops on the top the variation????? >>

HUBCAP - they are both variations, but the ones w/ the loops are harder to find, perhaps 1 in 10. As the majority was noticed and corrected, so for argument sake the first 10% wasn't caught...jay

    Jay- Nice work !!!

  • I learn the coolest things on this board. Nice post Hubcap, and well answered, Jay. I can go to bed tonight knowing a little more about cards than I knew this morning.

But that still doesn't explain the huge wax stain not getting a lower grade or a ST.

  • Jay,

Thanks for the info. I'll echo Buckwheat's sentiments - I'm happy to learn something here each and every day. This is why I read these posts. Thanks. I'll spring for an imported beer when we meet in a few weeks - forget what I said about buying the cheap stuff! imageimageimage

BUCKWEAT - BASILONE - Thanks for the nice words, just wanted to clairfy about the Erskine. I saw the loops several times on the card in the past and I didn't want anyone thinking that the card was power erased or altered.

JEB - Don't worry! If your buying, you can decide on what I'll be drinkingimage ...jay

    JEB-

Way to step up to the plate and snagging this bad boy.

After that...Jay just might be drinking the cheap stuff. image

  • John,

    Thanks.

That was the point of my previous post - i.e. the reason that I could only afford the cheap stuff!

JEB - Congrats on the Stargell '67 PSA-10, you stated to me you were gonna go for it. No doubt it will be 1 of the highlights of your collection. If you remember, I promised I would pay the shipping if you won it, and I'm a man of my word......Hmnnn! Just checked, and the shipping is postpaid, well I tried!. So no imported beer for us, domestic is fine by me. Do they have Rolling Rock out there in that jungle/swamp called Florida? image ...jay
  • Abe,

Thanks. Let me know what cards you need. I have a ton of raw stuff lying around. I'd be happy to send a few your way if I can be of any help.

    Jay,

Thanks again for paying the shipping costs ... that is very nice of you! image

I don't know if I'll be able to afford even a domestic beer at this point ... I might have to bring a 12 pack of Old Milwaukee with me! You bring the ice - I can't afford that, either! image

Hats off to John. I know people who have done that. I don't know anyone who remembered doing it.
