1805 Stemless Half-Cent, F-15??

I recently won this and wondered if you agreed with my grade estimate? While it's not the coin I'd like to end up with in my set, I like the date and thought I'd collect the different varieties and upgrade as I go. The color is along the lines of what I'm hoping for and there are no major gouges or rim dings, just a bit too much wear. XF-AU would rock the house!! Any comments? Be nice, I'm new to early copper.image

editted to add that there is an overdate at the five which can be seen in the picture and was included in a close-up with the auction. does that add any interest in the coin and how common is that with early Half-Cents??

I agree with you about the xf-au designation.I only collect mint state specimens by date and the competition is more fierce than Lincoln cents.

  • I call it a VG-10 and there are only four varieties in 1805, none of them are overdates. I'd have to check but I think there are some die rust problems on some of them.
  • Nice!

Looks pretty close to an F12, maybe a bit better. I only have one to compare it against though.image

F15 detail is reasonable. Compare to "Photograde", hair too weak for XF. Surfs look a little dark, dull / granular. If so, then net VG. If bad scan and surfs are smooth and glossy, then F.

    This is C1 / B1 - small 5, stemless, recut top strokeof 5 ; common - R1.
  • I'll agree with the C-1 but it is med 5 not small 5. The Small 5's are C-2 and C-3 and they R-5 and R-4. Much tougher coins than this one.

which of the four 1805 varieties will be the hardest in a nice XF-AU, hard brown with non-porous surfaces?? i'm not asking for too much, am i?

  • Cohen-2, finest known is only a VF-35. Finest C-3 is also a 35. Both the C-1 and C4 are available in AU. In Unc the C-1 is much cheaper than the C-4
