Best Way to Crossover from SGC to PSA

when looking to crossover a SGC 88 to PSA is it best to use the PSA crossover service or better to crack out of the holder and submit as raw?

Thanks for the thoughts.

IMO, crack it. There are only 2 graders who do the crossovers and they are the toughest by far. Throw in a natural predisposition for bias on other companies' holders and it works out to be the toughest submission equation.
  • Vargha,

Thank you for the help - I appreciate it.

I"ll concur with David. I've got about 20-25 cards that I submitted as crossovers that didn't make the grade (1-2 lower, depending on the card), cracked them and got the same or higher than the existing grade on the raw submission.

  • ...gotta pile on here. Absolutely crack 'em. This is actually a no-brainer. First, PSA won't care as much as you do when cracking the slab and second are the reasons David mentions. These are not imagined but very real human characteristics. It has been proven over and over again that crossing over is best done with an educated eye and submitting the card raw.

Something else to consider. . .when a grader is trying to evaluate a card through a holder, it will always be tougher to evaluate a card than holding the raw example. I would think that most graders would "safe-side" their evaluation rather than give the benefit of the doubt that they might give to a raw card.

The above is the best advice for crossing over an SGC 88 card. I have, in the past, successfully crossed over a few SGC 96 and SGC 98 cards to PSA 9s and 10s. If there is any doubt about a successful crossover (and for any GEM MINT card, there should always be doubt -- and almost always there should be doubt on vintage 96s....), I would keep the card in the original holder. If it does not cross to MINT 9 or better, you often would have been better off keeping it in the original holder.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

What's worse than cross-over service is the cross over service with a minimum grade selected, since that only goes to the head grader. The upside: you really do care about the minimum. The downside: if you're not happy with your SGC grade you can submit for crossover, have one of two people grade, then receive an even lower PSA grade.

So if sending the card raw is the consensus, how do you safely crack the SGC case?

cut off a corner with a dremell tool and then pop it with a screwdriver. 100% effective. also , make sure you have evaluated your card before cracking it. there are a lot of sgc 88's that will not cross to a psa 8 due to centering with tends to be more relaxed at sgc in that grade range.
