Acetone, I'm soaking in it!

Little tribute to Madge, who died last week.

Well, I got my 100% Acetone, and I'm prepared to fix the PVC on some silver Kennedies. What do you all use to submerge and remove your coins with?

I never did a dip before. BTW- I wonder how many people got long term illnesses from soaking their hands in dish detergent & don't know
that was the cause of it?

  • I don't need gloves for using acetone but I do recommend using a cardboard mat in case the coin slips and is dropped by slippery fingers: image

This has been gone over a few times; do a search.

I use 5 glass bowls of acetone, and soak the coins in the first one, then the second one, then use metal tongs to rinse the coins off in the last 3 bowls successively, then let them air dry for a couple seconds. Done. Be very careful with acetone; it's highly flammable.

  • Doing it in a well-ventilated area is not a bad idea either.
  • I would use plastic tongs available from Amos

  • Make sure the plastic will not be effected by the acetone. Some polymers swell when exposed to different solvents. This may leave a residue from the plastisizer used to make the tongs and deposit it on your coin.

I would also practice with some pocket change prior to using a collectable coin.

just use your bare hands but try not to let your hands/fingers soak in it too long.
it will dry your fingers out real good and may make the skin dry rough and flakey.

Careful with rubber gloves and plastics. They may just melt away. I once poured some acetone in a styrofoam cup. Never made that mistake again! I just grab the coin with my fingers.

NO! The majority of plastics will dissolve in acetone.

If you use your fingers, wash your hands very well first with detergent (dish soap). Otherwise some of the oils in your skin will be deposited on your coin.

  • I'm a little suprised at some of the answers. I think I'd be afraid to use metal tongs on a coin for fear of scratching it. Also, it seems that rubber or plastic may leave a residue from what some of you have said. I guess I'll use my fingers, my skin can always grow back!
    Does anyone make glass tongs?

  • 1jester, I did search, and have been reading the related threads for some time, it just seemed that the best method of extracting the coin was in question. Figured I'd post to try and get some more info.

Just remembered, as it's been a while since my last acetone soak. I've used some long Q-tips with wooden stems to help remove the coin from the acetone.
  • Acetone is nasty stuff....you guys be careful using it.
