2004 MS Kennedy (pics)

Raining in San Diego. Been tearing through mint rolls for my business strike collection. For you Kennedy collectors, this is the best one I've found thus far, having gone through a dozen rolls or so.

Post pics if you've found similar pieces, and especially a quality example from the Philadelphia mint -- the P Kennedys have been horrible -- I don't think I've saved but one or two, and I even hate those. I may slab this one:

Out of 2 rolls sets, I sent 5 to PCGS. 2xP, 3xD. Agree D (editted to change to D) mints are much more attractive--smoother, more lusters, less time in rock tumbler.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • Agree P mints are much more attractive

Actually, I meant D mints are superior. If you've found good Ps, I think it a good idea to hold on to them. They've been crap, although I didn't recognize it until a couple other forum members posted about it. I then went back to look through the ones I set aside, and they were right on the money -- almost all the ones I had put aside were Ds, almost no Ps.

    Brian,

I'd post a pic of my best 2004d but it looks like you took it out of my safe! Almost a dead ringer for yours. The same tics near the rim and light hits in the same various places. I think yours will grade 66. Just a few to many noticable small tics to grade 67 imho. The 2004 P's are terrible as my recent thread stated.

  • Did the Denver mint get their butts kicked for producing such junk in the past. Maybe they are taking heed to their reproof.

The Michigan state quarter rolls from denver that I have are producing some ms67 and better examples.

The MI-p rolls are absolutely terrible.

    It does pay to complain.

  • Actually, my P mint is better than my D mint....Ken

  • Steel, that certainly is a cut above the Ps I've seen, including strike and lack of marks. Plus your P appears to be free from the thin film of grime/oil/dirt I've seen in the Mint rolls. That's a nice modern find. Looking at the D, looks like a number of us have that rim nick at 7:00 o'clock. Ditto with the minor chatter around the edges. (I wonder if the mint sets will be any better. I doubt it -- they've been terrible the last several years, hardly worth paying the Mint's premium.)

So, what do you think these will grade? Tough to find superior MS examples, as the population report will attest.

  • I think the "D" would grade MS63 and the "P" would probably go MS66. But, they are in my almost completed raw set and that's where they will stay......Ken
