It looks like another artificially frosted cameo got by PCGS.

This PR67CAM Accented Hair listed on Teletrade looks a little funky.

If those images are an accurate representation, I think this coin had the frost added. If so, it's going to look like crap down the road.

  • It does look kinda funky... image
  • Is it the cheek area, the neck, or something else that makes you say this? I haven't a clue what to look for or how to detect such a thing. I'm sure in hand under a glass it would look different, but you have an eye to spot things from photos, indeed small crappy photos as well.

    David,

See how the frost on the devices is uneven and translucent in many areas? It's also off color, and appears to splash over a bit in to the fields - particularly around the eagle on the reverse.

If you'll look at the comp coins, that one was sold a few months ago with a similar pic. There are a few others in the comps that are dippers going bad, and the NGC coin looks like a NCS'r but it's better looking.

  • I see what you're saying, especially on the reverse. The frost looks all wrong. Thanks.

Missed that. So, this one is a return. I wonder if the buyer came to the same conclusion with the coin in-hand?

I think it was a hazy coin, and somebody cleaned up the fields but not the portrait, to make it look more came-ho.

    Hello all-

I have a different opinion on the coin. I find is silly that it graded 67. The spots and the haze should put at a 65-66 at best. The haze or cameo if you will does seem to spill into the fields which is curious??? A pretty crappy coin in my opinion!!!

My take on the coin is that the obverse portrait has been painted with solution. If you look at the coin, it's got a translucent glow. I think the coin was dipped, and painted. JMO. That coin was sold in December in this auction. For a look at what it should look like, here's a comp coin. Think that one's ugly, try this dipper that's turning, or maybe this one.

Don, I had no idea these were selling for $300.00+ in 67CAM. I guess there is enough motivation, for some, to mess around with them. Sad, as who knows? The coin may have had enough frost/CAM to merit CAMEO on its own merits. I'm guessing the guru who worked this one was going for a DCAM? Pathetic.

Here's an example of a fake frosted one to compare to:

    It was also graded PR67CAM.

    How is fake frost applied?

A couple of methods. One I've heard is the acid used in "Nic-a-date" to raise the date in 'dateless Buffalo' nickels is gently applied using small model hobbiest paint brushes.

Russ, you are wrong - the picture makes it look like crap now

in the future, it will probably look crappier (so you are partly correct)image
