At what price color???

Let's say we're talking about, oh, a common date Peace Dollar in an easily obtained grade, say MS63. What would you imagine might be an expected premium for a coin with moderate toning??

If the toning is only somewhat attractive I probably wouldn't go over $50-70 depending. That's been about the trend I've seen.

    Moderate toning,$30.00 premium.

It depends on what you mean by moderate toning.

    A gold toned 1925 - no premium - that's how they come.

An ugly brown splotchy toned coin - no premium - wouldn't purchase it

A coin with some interesting colors, say reds, blues, bright golds, in some sort of interesting pattern - may go $40-$50 above bid.

It just boils down to what the coin looks like and what captures your attention - just toning for toning sake doesn't get it

  • FC has the way I feel about toning. Some of the premiums I have seen paid for a coin with toning just astounds me. Bob

Well some people pay for toning and some people pay premiums for other things. Some folks pay huge premiums for FBL Franklin's, FSB Mercs, a extra step or 2 on nickels, etc. etc. Would I pay any kind of premium for these designations, and the coin can receive such designations without being fully struck? Ha, not in this lifetime but I don't knock these collectors for collecting what they enjoy. Some folks like ugly toned JFK's with a little brown endroll pattern. Does nothing for me and I wouldn't even give 50 cents for these things. Collect what you enjoy and enjoy what you collect I say.image

Peace dollars are not common with color, much less "nice" color. That's a beauty XpipedreamR.

Toning is a funny thing...if your coin has it and you want to sell, there's little to no premium involved. If it's listed by certain dealers, the sky is the limit.

    hey Mark

you raise a pertinent point. Peace Dollars aren't often seen with pleasant tone and when they are, well, the price is usually way up there. i'm assuming there are several reasons for that, among them the fact that Peace Dollars weren't stored in bags to the extent that Morgan Bullion was and the lesser number struck and not melted by the mid-1930's. that's a peculiar thing and probably worthy of it's own thread, the number of Peace Dollars still available.

here's a link to the subject coin which has sold over at the BST. i was interested in it and thought i'd get some feedback without a link since i didn't want to give the impression i might be hawking the bugger for stman. also, i didn't want to be misunderstood and start some unnecessary trouble. once again, asleep at the switch.

Zero premium. The same amount dealers will pay when such coins are offered to them.

I don't believe in paying premiums for coins that are thinly traded. In my part of the country dealers don't pay premiums for anything. If I am to change my opinion I have to see real CASH offers coming my way. I don't want to hear "how much do you want for it". A week ago I had some great toners out for sale at a local show...virtually no interest was evident and none sold.
