Buffalo experts. Would you please grade this 1938 D/D?

Thanks for your opinions. The photo's do not do this coin justice.

Thanks again

    I'd say MS65.
  • I should have asked this when I posted this question. Please excuse me.

What are the pick-up points on the Buffalo? What does PCGS focus in on for the majority opinion on grading?

    Thanks

    Focus on? Who knows? image

I do know they would downgrade an otherwise nice coin if the strike is weak....on a 38-D that is almost never the case. So....yours is probably a typical MS65 or MS66. Can't really tell from the photo.

MS65. If the surfaces are clean of spots, MS66. The strike keeps it from MS67.

By the way, are you sure that's an RPM as opposed to an OMM? I can clearly see a second D, but there also appears to be something inside the D (maybe an S).

If it is an OMM, it is not OMM-1b.

  • Thanks for all the replies.

Shamika, I'll have to get a better loupe. I couldn't see anything else inside the D. There are no spots on the coin. When you say strike, is there a particular area that is looked at for the depth of the strike?

I looked in my Cherrypickers guide and the 1938 D/D is not a listed coin. Is threre such a thing as a D/D/S?

"Is threre such a thing as a D/D/S?"

    Yes. OMM-1b is D/D/S. OMM-1 is D/D/D/S and all other OMM's are just D/S.

The central areas are the deepest parts of the die. I look at the area just above the ribbon tieing the braid on the obverse and the thick hair across the shoulder.

1938-D buffalos are always VERY well struck. In your case, the strike is not 100%. Given your description that the coin is spotless, I'll go ahead and say MS66.
