Have you actually ever bought anything from him?

Two coins have been purchased from them. One I have had for about three years and it is PQ for the grade. The other is on the way here right now. One thing I will say is they are not cheap to buy from. On this last coin I did look up the Auction it came from and they actually put just a normal price on the coin that would make them a few bucks. Nothing outlandish to rip a collector that wanted the coin.

I can only judge his coins by the ebay scans and the buy it now levels or the starting bids. I've yet to see anything in the silver type area that caught my eye as being higher end with nice orig color. But I tend to be on the conservative side. You've already mentioned the price issue. I just see this as "product" and pretty much what most high end retail dealers carry these days.

Had any problems returning a coin if it was not up to your expectations? Or maybe even having a coin sent to you? Any kind of problem at all!!

  • Nice quality stuff but high priced! Good customer service.

I think one should concentrate on how you are treated by a dealer than worry about the prices they charge. I mean, YOU should KNOW what the coin is worth before you even consider buying. It's the little things that make a dealer good or bad. Like getting a no hassle return policy etc. etc.

Hamrick is an ok guy. I hate the photos he has on Ebay however. All the coins look dull and lifeless....I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that all his coins are probably not dull and lifeless. image

John has been a dealer for over 40 years. He was the founder of World Wide Coin Investments of Atlanta and is an excellent numismatist. He is honest and I am sure will be an excellent person to do business with. He will not "jack" you around.
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Here's the REAL question. I know his reputation, and he stocks some great coins, but everytime I see his prices, I just simply will not call because a "customary" break would just not be enough. Does he negotiate fairly on price? He obviously knows how high he is pricing his coins.

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

He HAS to be selling something or he wouldn't have been in business this long. So I am assuming that he does do some negotiating on price. I'm not not trying to get something for nothing -- I know dealers have to make a living or they wouldn't be around to sell me any coins. But there has to be some reasonableness involved. Any dealer I've ever dealt with will tell you I don't try to kill them in a deal. Fairness all the way around is good for the whole industry. I'm sorry but some of his prices are on the verge of "gouging."

Does he post to the forum any? This might be a thread he needs to read.

If his coins are "too high priced" he wouldn't be in business long would he? Some think you have to pay for premiums coins. Others don't....it's up to you. image

I must agree with Doug on this issue.I feel much better, giving my money to a dealer that is willing to haggle a little. It doesn't matter how high end the coin is.I think it is a feeling of friendlyness.

His coins are priced high like Rick Tomaska's. But Rick does a very nice job of giving me breaks when I press. I still pay full retail IMO, but we are both satisfied at the end of the day.

  • Several years ago, at one of my Baltimore Coin and Currency Conventions, John Hamrick came to me with a large stack of
Certified $20.00 St. Gaudens in MS64 that he had just found sitting on the shelf in one of the telephone booths. I can not remember
the exact amount perhaps it is was 16 or 20 of them, and it
certainly added up to one heck of a lot of money. At the time
they were worth about $900.00 each.

Instead of just keeping them, cracking them out and either selling them raw or resubmitting them and keeping the money for himself, he choose to do the honorable thing and come forward and turn them in. We did find the owner of these coins and the coins were returned.

  • Hamrick is a great guy! Tough, yes... but they don't call him "The Hammer" for nothing. Seriously, John has a great eye for quiality coins and a top reputation in the business.

high prices yes, but he does have a good eye for original coins. example, take a look at his walkers & slqs sometime, not a lot of crummy "blast-white", which i appreciate. my success buying from him has been limited by price, not quality.

I'm not questioning his honesty, or his eye for coins -- he certainly does find nice coins to stock.

But so far, I haven't heard anyone say that they have transaction experience with him, and whether or not he will work with you on the prices he puts on them.

    Doug,

I have had transaction experience with him at shows and over the internet....
On some coins he can "work" a little and on others there may not be much "room."

but you really need to ask him about the coin in question.......image

    Good luck !!
