Bavarian Madonna Thaler of Maximilian III Josef, KM-234.1, Davis #1953, 1st year of issue. The same design was used for a 1/2 Thaler, but Krause doesn't list one as being issued in 1760.

What's the diameter? Looks like some restrike of a Bavarian thaler.

OK, so it is full size then. Something about it just doesn't look right. It looks like some sort of modern fabrication to my eye.

In hand, it has the look of Old silver, If it is a restrike it was done quite awhile back.

As long as it weighs 28g. or so, you've got me sold. Just looks really strange in the image. Maybe it's the cleaning.

No, I stand by my initial conviction. There are just too many things not right about it. The date is too large. Maximilian Joseph's hair is not right, nor is his eye. The edge is wrong, almost looks like a collared strike.

Maybe it's a medal of some sort. That was my first impression, which is why I asked about the diameter.

I don't know exactly what it is, but it just doesn't look like a 1760 Bavarian thaler should (to my eye at least).

Is there an engraver's name or initials? (sorry my eyes aren't great)... If so I'll try looking them up in Forrer.

It looks like there's some beneath the bust. Can't read them in the photo though.
