So what is the highest return on a coin you've sold.....

while holding it for less than a year with a minimum buy-in at $ 100.

Comments

  • A 14D Lincoln pulled from going through rolls in 1965. Sold it for $50 that day.

Now that return on an annualized basis...........................

Speaking from a collectors point of view, and basing it on coins that I bought to own and not necessarily to sell, but ended up selling for whatever reason, upgrades, etc.

1904-s Barber Half PCGS-45 bought at 575.00 sold for 1800.00 with in a year. 213%
    1856 FE PCGS-25 Bought at 5500.00 sold for 7650.00 in about a year 39%
1916 SLQ PCGS-45 Bought at 5750.00 sold for 8500.00 in exactly one year almost to the day 48%

1939-d Jefferson PCGS-67FS (Bought RAW) for $5.00 sold two years later at 895.00 1,780% this was a few years ago, today its worth twice that easily!

  • Assuming that a moderator would read the question in it's entirety, then the 14D Lincoln sold for 50% less! image

I bought a Seated Half in an old PCI MS62 holder on Ebay for ~$300, cracked it out, got it in a PCGS MS62 holder, and sold it on Ebay for ~$570 about 6 weeks later.

Also, bought a Vatican Euro set from their Mint for about $40, and if I recall correctly it sold for a bit under $1000 on Ebay.

Most of the old timers here who know me will remember. For the newbies I purchased a 1937 PR66 RD Lincoln and resubmitted it to PCGS for CAM designation.I got the CAm designation, and sold the coin for 1000% profit.

  • The last coin I purchased before i left the hobby for 10 years in 89 was a raw type date saint that the dealer graded 63 and was asking 1000 dollars for it. After looking at the coin under a loop with a good light I paid him 1000 without even asking him to lower the price, as soon as it came back from pcgs in a 64 holder I had no problem selling it for the prevailing hot market 64 price. It was either 1600 or 1800, I don't remember which.

Also I still have a type date Indian cent in an old green pcgs 65 red holder that I bought in 2001 for 189 dollars plus shipping and don't want to sell but almost every dealer that has 65 red type date Indians now is asking on either side of 500 for them.

Now about the one that got away, I sold my only type date 2 and a half dollar gold Indian [m.s.65] in 2000 for 1600 dollars !!!! Blah !!!

  • "Created" a 2002 West Point Silver Dollar Commemorative, graded PR70DCAM by PCGS. At the time, the population was 2 for 70s in Proof. Had about $45.00 wrapped up in the Commemorative,so I couldn't refuse the offer of $3500.00 that was made to me. They seem to be selling for a tad less money at the moment ($350-400). image

    Enjoy your coins!!!!!image

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Bought a 1918-S Buffalo raw from a dealer in Cape Girardeau Missouri about 8 years ago for $300.00 the guy didn't believe in slabbing coins and had it in a 2X2 graded "UNC"......

A week later I went to a coin show in St. Louis and sold the coin to a dealer from Kearney Nebraska for $3500.00 and my choice of 20 IHC's to boot!image

Edited to add Of the 20 IHC's all were uncirculated and included 1864-L, 1866, 1872, 1909-S....
  • Bought a $8 1918 Buffalo from a storefront dealer who didn't even look at it closely. It turned out to be 1918/7 overdate in F15. Had it certified and sold it for $1500. What's that something like 1865%?
  • Very interesting thread. What is most interesting is how the biggest premiums were earned on resubmissions/crack outs and quick flips. None of this, "I bought the coin raw 20 years ago for $3 and had it slabbed and then auctioned for $4,000".

Does this big returns only happen in the short term during a hot market?
