So now how long will it take me to find a 1940 reverse of 1938 proof? It's the only one left I need.

nice score!!!! i constantly check the holders for undesignated coins. they're out there to be found by the diligent collector. i'm currently on a coin that's hldered with a poor scan that looks like the "wrong" reverse. cherry-pickin' is really a riot.
about 3-4 months ago i came upon my 1940 Reverse of 1938----the raw coin pictured below. it holdered at PCGS PR67 and has great color and modest obverse cameo. between the both of us we've managed two of toughest Proof issues for the series. maybe we should post a combinedregistry set!!!

The Reverse of 38 has wavy, ill-defined steps.
The Reverse of 40 has sharply defined steps.
---------------------------------------------------------
For the proof issues only:
All 1938's have the wavy steps.
Most 1939's have the wavy steps, but at some point they switched and made a
very low percentage with sharp steps - thus, the scarce 1939 Rev 40 proofs.
Most 1940's had sharp steps, but they used at least one old die with wavy steps
for a very low percentage of the total - thus, the scarce 1940 Rev 38 proofs.
---------------------------------------------------------
For the MS issues only:
1939 was the transition year, with a fair percentage of both types being minted
at all three mints.
