In an effort to make the State Quarters look good, the US Mint......

....has provided me with this totally uninspired commem. Received them yesterday. What are they thinking? Although the mint has issued some el-crapo designs over the years, this is one of the worst IMHO. I'm not knocking modern commems here, in fact I own a complete set. But this is right up there with Maria's Mom. (Spec Olympics)

I'd say that it's pretty ugly...
They should have done better...

Sponsors of these modern commemorative coins are only interested in how much money can be generated. As a result they stick with boring, uninspired designs that will offend no one. Coin collectors, as a group, seem to be willing to keep buying commems that have no artistic merit.
Last year I put together a complete set of the modern commem dollars. I lined them up one day and rated them from an artisic standpoint. I didn't rate even one design as being above average in artistic merit. I rated MANY as being below average. As a result of this artistic review I decided to discontinue the collection and sell it off.
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
I really wish (I know it will not happen) that NOBODY would purchase these just to prove the point and ram it home.
It seems like everyone complains about them (I know I do) and then we all go buy them.
What incentive does the Mint have to stop producing such crap if everyone is willing to buy it.
Sure we aregue, complain and discuss in this forum and every other coin related forum the problems the US Mint has with creating classical beautiful designs, and when they create crap, yet again, we all run out and buy it.
I WILL NOT buy this commem. that is a promise. God as my witness I won't touch it.
It is horrible and almost as bad as some of the recent state quarters.
<< <i>There is no hope. Great art requires a dedication to find the best artists and pay them appropriately. The mint is looking for artists who work cheap, per their Renaissance program.

That is definately a way to prove your point. Although I think the Leif Ericson commem eas a bit of a suprise from the Mint, I agree with you that most all modern commems are pretty bad looking. Just compare them to the original 50 Cent commems from years ago and they don't come close at all. And they have MORE ROOM for artistic design on the silver dollar than the 50 cent and they are still ugly. It makes no sense at all.
