A very nice 26D Merc from a forum member.

The picture does this coin no justice period. It does catch what I wanted to point out which is the strike on this fairly hard date to find well struk in all areas. Some minor fade is seen at the lettering around the rims but outside of that this coin has it all. It is a FB coin but a hit right in the middle of the center band takes the coin out of the FB designation, so the grading services say. The color is fantastic and original. NGC put a MS65 grade on the coin and in my opinion it is under graded, especially for them, by a point.

This coin was bought from forum member "jom" and personally I do not see why he let the coin go. Thanks Jom, this coin has surpassed the wildest expectations that were had.

  • I would agree with a 66 grade, as long as the toning doesn't hinder the luster any... cheek looks pretty clean... but it looks like you need some scratchaway for that slab... image

George after I am done with you Toned Mercs will be your favorite coin. A couple of the folks here have been converted from Blast White to Toned already. Your day will certainly arrive.....imageimageimageimage

By the way the cheek is spot less. I could not find a single slide mark or hairline on the coin period. That is why I say the coin is under graded. A couple of little hits but that does not put the coin out of the 66 grade.

Nice coin, Ken. Looks like there are some scratches on the holder.

  • My sig line Merc was my first toner, and I've added another to my set. This new one is a 45 in ANACS-66, "Dirty Toning" but it covers the whole obv of the coin, which gives it the eye appeal, I probally wouldn't like it if it was splotchy... anyways, there is a hint of some rainbowing around the rims on both sides, the Reverse isn't as toned, it's a lot lighter, though still a little darker than normal in the center, and it shows a light red around the rims...

    Ken,

That's a gorgeous '26-D. The strike appears to be above average, with only slight weakness at the tops of some letters. Congratulations, but I'm jealous. That's one of the 4 dates I still need for my set. I'd crack it out in a heartbeat; it looks like it has an excellent chance of going 66.

    Ken,

That looks very close to my 65FB - it is indeed gorgous - for all intent and purposes I'd call it FB too - I personally would not upgrade it - whatever it may just be me - I'd rather have superior examples of the grade than otherwise.
On second thougth I wonder if it really is non FB etc. In the photo it really looks fully split - is it my screen? image
Lucy - did you decide to play nice now??imageimage

Marc the coin is a Full Band coin but the hit on the middle band will not let it get the designation. As far as cracking the coin out, I just do not do that. Big Chicken plus I do not want to take a chance of inflicting any damage to the coin.

Maybe a Cross try will be tried but right now I am very happy just the way it is. image

not a chicken at all - .....Good Move IMHO- Those that don't do crack will save money and the grief that comes along with this game. I have never cracked a coin out nor do I really ever plan to for obvious reasons and my sinile M.O.imageimage

  • Hey Ken,

Glad to see you're still around. image

That looks like a mighty fine coin to me. If I had it, I'd have NO problem taking my side-cutters to the holder and submitting it raw to PCGS.
