  • That's pretty cool, whatever it is. Is it yours? Can you get a close-up of the date?

  • Here is a close up
  • I thought it was "impossible" to have a doubled die now... could this just be mechanical doubling?

  • Did you first notice something with this coin with the naked eye? Or only after looking at it under magnification?

  • I got it in change at McDonalds and scanned to so that everyone could see a pic of a new 2004 cent and i noticed a little doubling.
  • Looks like you're on to something! Great find, hope I can find one. When/where did you find it?
  • O'Hare McDonalds. On a flight home. Might be a good find

It is mechanical doubling, BUT very nice mechanical doubling at that!
  • Is there any other doubling on the profile?Wording?Reverse? If its not mechanical doubling you can be on to something big.

Don't know why this thread died. No lincoln expert, but mechanical doubling on the entire date?

I don't think it's a Doubled Die. While the date clearly looks to be doubled, you would expect to also see comparable doubling on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST.

Aside from that, I can't explain it definitively.

It is very possible to have doubling that shows mainly on the date. It is supposed to be impossible to have hub doubling on modern coins, but this idea has been nixed with the discovery of a couple of different doubled dies minted during the "single squeeze" years, so it is entirely possible that a doubled die could exist from 2004.

As for the images, it is too difficult with those images to tell 100%, but from what I can see, I see a doubled die. It could well be something else, but it does not appear to be mechanical doubling. I would like very much to be able to see this one closer up.

  • shanks82, Looks like a doubled die to me also...I hope that it is. From what I can tell it looks like the secondary is smaller than the primary...this would be class 3 I believe...I HOPE IT IS. This is what makes coin collecting fun...when you find it and least expect it.
  • If it is mechanical doubling, then shouldn't there be "shelving" on all the obverse letters?
I don't see anything other than on the date.

We need a good high resolution close-up image of the date.

Mechanical doubling can be very selective on what it doubles. I have seen mechanical doubling that only shows on the mintmark.

  • It looks promising but it's really hard to tell from those scans. Best to have a true expert take a hard look at it. image
