What is a 1923D $20 St. Gaudens Worth

I am not a big collector but I do want to have a $20 gold coin and I saw one this one in a shop I looked at PCGS population report and it shows only 427 graded at this level. I can buy it for $595 is that a good deal? Sorry for such a basic question but I am new. Thanks

It depends on the condition of the coin. Is the coin encapsulated in plastic? If you do not know how to grade and the coin is not professionally graded by either PCGS or NGC, I would pass. If you would like to buy such a coin, I would contact a reputable dealer. Pinnacle Rarities and Legend Mumismatics are two large national dealers that both participate on these boards and sell such coins regularly. There are many others, as well. Good luck.
  • I did not mention that it is a PCGS graded coin.
  • Need a grade number. They jump in price depending on even 1 grade up or down!

Based on pop # you have an MS62. Since you can buy MS63 common dates for $575 and MS64's for $675-700 right now, and commond date MS62's for around $520, this is a poor value right now for $595. MS62's have dropped from $580 to $510 over the past month. Your dealer is asking yesterday's price or today's massive retail price. Unless an MS62+++ old holdered coin, I'd go elsewhere.

Any number of sellers could provide you with a killer MS63+ for around $600 or less. PM me if you need more information.

  • Thanks everyone, I think it may be little high from the info you have provided. I just thought because of the low PCGS population it may be a coin worth more. I see one on ebay in MS62 essentially the same coin I will see what it sells for before I make the dealer an offer. Your replies are a big help!!

You should spend TIME at looking at many different Saints in many different grades so you can tell the difference. THEN I'd go try to buy a high end piece in whatever grade makes your pocket book happy. image I'd shoot for a high end MS64 but you might have a different level in mind. Good luck!
