I'm going to hold out for a gem example

This beaut is up for auction in the current Bower's sale:

1777 Bar Cent Fantasy in White Metal. Choice Uncirculated.
Lot Information
Current Bid: $80.00   (amount with BP: $92.00)
Current Time: 05:26 PM PST.
Description: A very interesting piece obviously based on the popular Bar Cent design, but here with a crude 1777 date beneath an equally crude USA monogram. Struck on an oval-shaped planchet. The 1777 date may refer to the date that the original Bar Cents were struck, which would be interesting information if it could be verified.

  • Why didn't they just say "reproduction" instead of trying to glamourise it with "fantasy". Hmmm...time to strike a few more, tumble them and pawn off at $77 a piece image

a "reproduction" would be an attempt to mimic the original design. by adding the "1777", the coin no longer follows the design of the bar copper, thus it's not a repro, it's basically an imaginary or "fantasy" design. at least, that's been my interpretation.

you'll seem the term "imitation" used by cc's as well, ie. "imitation halfpenny", etc.
