1950 Proof issues.

Does anyone think the individual grading services will ever recognize the two types of finishes on these coins and designate them as either Type 1-Type 2 or Satin-Brilliant?? Would either carry a premium based on what you see in the individual series' that you collect??

    Keets,

I didn't know there were any opinions regarding two types of finishes on these issues. Do you have any examples?

    hey Shamika

you'd need to have the two types in front of you, especially with coins that are hazed or toned. the earliest strikes from the year evidentally were struck with dies prepared a bit differently though it is possible that they may just be examples struck from overused dies. a comparison might be the 1936 proofs which also can be found in satin and brilliant. whatever the mint did in 1950, it doesn't seem to have been repeated thereafter. maybe the talent was drained from the mint and the workers had to relearn the process.

I have a PCGS PR65CAM cent that I'll have to compare to later date proofs. Off the top of my head, the one in my collection is no different than my later dates, but I won't know until I look.

    Interesting idea none the less.

    hey Morris

that looks like the PR66CAM type!!

i imagine the difference is mainly in the mirrors. the Type 1's would have an overall softer, shallower appearance whereas the brilliant coins should appear much the same as later years. from that perspective, your coin is probably the Type 2.

this all goes contrary to some of what i'd assumed with 1936-1942 Proofs, that there are Cameo's which will eventually come to light. some seem to be finding their way into holders as of late, but not what i'd assumed would. maybe they will eventualy, but now i'm starting to think that the techniques used 1936-1942 ran contrary to what's done today. perhaps when the Mint began issueing Proofs in 1950 they needed a little time to refine their methods of die prep.

hey now, that looks like a fine example of a Type 1/Satin finish Jefferson. it clearly has the appearance of a Matte Proof or the average Modern Circulation Commemorative. just from the obverse picture i'd say PR67.

  • Type I ? Maybe LDS ? This is a rock solid type II if that's the case.

Hmmm ...never gave much thought to there being two distinct types. My PR-68 strikes me as more "satiny" when comparing it to my other 1950s which are more "brilliant."

This is a neat thread. It got me looking at my 53 proof set.

Pretty '41! That shows some CAM as well, doesn't it?
  • Hi Randy....You're looking good. No....may just a touch of Cameo but not enough to call it out as such. The 1940 is the other book-end. Both with liquid fields and steps you can shave with. They sat side by side in an old album....giving them that blue, violet and gold toning.

Ya got me looking Keets but I'm not ready for a Type I Type I or Type II or Type II Type I or Type II.....Keep having fun.....
