Davalillo 1961 Nu-Card Scoops Set - Charity to Phil Messmore

Some of you may recall that it was shortly over one year ago that our board's beloved Philabuster, Phil Messmore, announced that he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. A link to the original thread is here

Shortly thereafter, Davalillo announced that he was going to complete the set as a Tribute to Phil. One of Davalillo's posts on this subject is found here.. Recently, Davalillo was able to finish grading of his set. His set is now listed here.

Davalillo is looking to upgrade his set to as high as he possibly can. Currently, Jim is in contact with Phil's family about a particular charity that would be most suitable for donations. For every upgrade that Davalillo gets, he will make a contribution to that charity. [the exact amount was not conveyed to me at the time of this writing]. Jim's thoughts on this are as follows "I would appreciate you putting a note up on the message boards about this first because it is a tribute to a guy who was very enthusiastic about his set and second because helping me build a first class set as a tribute to him helps his charity.

Now - I know that not everyone here agrees with everything Jim has said or done in the past two years. Nonetheless, I think we all agree that Phil was a great guy to the hobby, and his absence is sorely missed. Jim's motivations are pure, and hopefully a coordinated effort by all here will help assist a charity that may help prevent sicknesses like these in the future.

I encourage you to help out if you can. The set will always be listed on the Registry as "..Tribute to Phil Messmore". If you do have cards available for sale, please contact Jim directly at jdc122@aol.com

    Agreed!

I thought that it was a nice sentiment to name his set in honor of Phil. The charity aspect is a nice touch.
Please keep us posted on what charity is decided upon and where we can help support the effort.

bravo Jim , I was not on these boards until the past year and did not know phil but that is a great gesture.

I have a #428 Robinson psa 8 lying around somewhere , I will send it off to Jim so that he can upgrade it and have him send whatever the selling price would have been to phil's charity. These are the things outside of collecting that keeps me coming back to the boards and truly highlights the types of individuals that post here

  • Is this the horrible self centered Davalillo that half the board has no use for and is glad he no longer posts here??image

I wonder how many of them would have done the same thing.Doesn't seem too many did.

    Nice Gesture Jim!!!

    You are a class act

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

    How much is Jim contributing?

Most of us do not have the same resources as Jim, but perhaps collectively we can match Jim's donations.

  • I just sent Jim 12 PSA 8's as upgrades and didn't know what he ment in his set title. A great jesture.I did not know Phil but I did buy cards from him awhile ago on the net and didn't know about his illness.Jim keep up the great work . Krazy

Does anyone know what charity has been selected?

Also does anyone know how much Jim is donating?
  • What difference does it make Koby? Are you looking for something to criticize Jim about?

    WTF?

Just wondering whether the rest of us can contribute to the charity of choice. Is that ok with you?
